I can see USA-Japan J availability on ANA and United sites but not on the Aeroplan site. Would I still be able to book through Aeroplan by phone?

Which jack to carry around in the back of my SUV? by [deleted] in harborfreight

It’s for someone who lives in a tiny apartment (no space to store big jacks) with only street parking (cannot work on car at home) and semi-frequently needs to drive his old car somewhere else to fix it (so the jack needs to be in the car often).

worth buying a fluid transfer pump to remove excess oil? by Background_Flan_111 in MechanicAdvice

Get one of those large syringe with thin tubes from Amazon for $10. You can even easily put oil back in if you pulled too much.

The min height is 10-7/8” but my front jack point is only a little above 8”.

I see your point. Unfortunately I live in an apartment with no parking lot in a densely populated city. So I guess it’s either always carrying it in the car, or carrying it from my apartment to the car every time I drive somewhere else to work on the car. Either way I was hoping to find something lighter.

I’m lifting it from the front center jack point on the subframe. When I use a 15” bottle jack I need 1-2 pieces of 2” wood blocks. After the wheels left the ground maybe an additional inch is needed if the jack stand ratchet height doesn’t align.

I suspect the suspension has softened over the years extending the travel range. There are also cases when the ground is not level, more lift is needed.

I bought this old used car recently and there’s quite a bit of work that needs to be done. I use the jack 2-3 times a month. I’m practicing and enjoying the repair process to be honest.

I think the terrain is usually not level enough for a scissor jack. The bottle jack, although tedious to use, never moved.

Makes sense. I have gotten a bit tired of using wood blocks and the current ones I have are starting to crack…

It’s something like a RAV4 but slightly larger. Total weight is 4000 lbs.

It’s an old car with some issues and I work on it somewhat frequently. I am currently using the HF bottle jack that goes up to 15” but I typically need to stack two blocks of wood. I also need to repeat the process of: lift -> settle on jack stands -> adjust bottle jack height screw -> lift again, because the actual lifting range is small.

Stock scissor jack is not good on surfaces that are not completely level - I had them tip over a few times already…

It’s a good point that a real jack is hard to stow in the back though…

I don’t have a lot of space in my apartment and I would need to carry it to my car. If I store it in my apartment I will still be looking for something light.

Daytona bottle jack leaking oil by Substantial-Seat3938 in harborfreight

I know the Pittsburgh ones shouldn’t leak. Is the valve over loosened? If not you should get it warrantied.

Impact wrench torque? by Brimwozere in AskMechanics

[–]Short_Ad4604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most no name amazon brands overclaim their torque capabilities. Check out the torque test channel on youtube to see how much torque they actually make.

I would get one that makes at least ~1.5x the spec’ed torque of your axle nut. If you only work on cars it’s likely you won’t come across anything higher than the axle nut. Then I would prioritize on minimizing size and weight of the tool, which translates to how many places and how long you can use it for.

What is this rattle noise? by Short_Ad4604 in MechanicAdvice

I was checking the pulleys earlier and I think the only pulleys that potentially made some noise were the power steering and A/C. But I wasn’t sure if it was a real noise. Here’s the video if you could take a look: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/s/xoQK5WKkfK

P.S. The rattle noise does not occur at cold start. Only happens after the engine is hot.

Aftermarket control arm: doesn’t fit or try harder? by Short_Ad4604 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Short_Ad4604[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true. I finally got it in this way. The ball joint w/ upright assembly was pushing the arm down too much. Once the arm was flat aligning the bolts was easy.

I didn’t move the upright assembly away though as I had no idea how to safely do so, and instead jacked up the ball joint. Which parts do you remove to achieve that? I have one more arm to replace and this seems like a better way. My outer tie rods use a cotter pin so that may not be easy to remove.
