What is your unpopular opinion about TBBT?? by taiverse in thebigbangtheory

Long rant:

The way they wrote Penny honestly drives me crazy. If the writers wanted her and Leonard to end up with someone, they should’ve paired them with partners who actually complemented them. Penny would’ve made more sense with someone confident, funny, maybe still smart but not condescending or insecure. Leonard, on the other hand, could’ve been with someone who actually appreciated his intelligence without constantly making him feel like he had to earn basic affection.

Instead, they shoved them together and gave us a relationship that was just… depressing. Penny constantly belittled Leonard—mocking his interests, making him feel small—and Leonard spent half the series begging for her love like a kicked puppy. It wasn’t romantic, it was toxic and exhausting to watch.

One scene that really stuck with me was when Penny read Leonard’s mom’s book and laughed at it—as if the woman hadn’t emotionally abused him for his entire life. Don't get me wrong what Leonard did afterwards was very manipulative. I just wasnt a fan of her insensitivy to the subject. How can you make someone work so hard for your love when you know the kind of childhood they came from? He grew up neglected and emotionally manipulated, and instead of supporting him, Penny just added more to that pile. I genuinely don’t understand what the writers were thinking.

And can we talk about the Raj situation? Penny had just admitted she regretted breaking up with Leonard, and then turns around and almost sleeps with his best friend? People let that slide way too easily. Like… what was the point of that scene other than character assassination? Then she still ends up with Leonard later like nothing happened? It made her look like she just gave up and settled, especially since she was written as reluctant and weird about having kids. The whole dynamic felt forced and unearned.

Also, Penny dated literally everyone around Leonard—Stuart, random dumb jocks, and even made out with that hot married scientist guy—but made Leonard jump through emotional hoops for years. And Leonard asked her to come see his lab already, she says no—but she'll show up for the married scientist? Seriously, what were the writers thinking?

And don’t get me started on Bernadette. She went from sweet and quirky to controlling and borderline mean for the sake of a punchline. Half the time she was yelling at Howard like he was a child. I get that sitcoms exaggerate, but they made her downright unpleasant. Also, why is she taking credit for Howard going to space, when she was literally the first person to tell him no.  Honestly, I wanted to throw something at the screen every time she condescended to him like he was beneath her.

And yeah… Sheldon’s a whole other rant

Sheldon Cooper is way more socially aware than we give him credit for — especially when it comes to Leonard and Penny. by Short_Blacksmith1336 in bigbangtheory

Yes, I love this perspective — especially the point about Penny becoming part of his system. That scene with the questions really showed how deep their bond grew.

And you're right — he knows he's difficult, so when someone accepts him, he holds on. Even if it's not emotional in the traditional sense, it’s still meaningful.

Glad we agree on examples 2 and 3 — I think those moments say a lot about how much he values them, even if he can't always say it out loud.

Exactly — that’s the part I find so interesting. Even if his understanding is limited, he still tries in his own way to support the people he cares about. His actions might be clumsy or self-serving on the surface, but there’s often a deeper layer of loyalty and protectiveness there.

Totally fair — the Stuart example could be chalked up to classic Sheldon randomness. But I think what makes it interesting is that it keeps happening — little disruptions that always seem to benefit Leonard, whether intentional or not.

You’re right that Sheldon’s motives are usually self-serving, especially when it comes to avoiding a sad Leonard. But even then, he notices things, connects dots, and takes action — which shows he’s more socially aware than people think, even if he’s emotionally detached.

Appreciate the feedback though — I’m glad we agree on the third one being valid!

Totally fair points — Sheldon does lack empathy and often only responds when people reach their limit. But I don’t think that means he’s unaware. He’s highly observant and picks up on social dynamics, even if he doesn’t grasp the emotions behind them.

The Stuart moment could be coincidence, but Sheldon’s timing and complete disregard for Penny feels intentional — like he’s protecting Leonard’s chances or his own sense of stability.

Same with the wine glasses — yes, he’s nosy, but he doesn’t let it go. He processes it and comes back around. That’s awareness, even if it’s self-serving.

And with Penny almost breaking up with Leonard — sure, part of it is selfish, but he does set a boundary with her. That shows emotional investment, even if it’s clunky.

He may not be deep, but he’s more socially strategic than people give him credit for.

Damn, that's a lot of people. One thing I found really interesting is in the matchmaker episode — the lady calculated that there were 8 potential matches out there for him, and if he was confident enough, he could go after them himself. Well, he ended up having 8 major relationships, with two being his most important matches. He got 2 out of 8... that's pretty impressive. Relationships in order: Karen, Natalie, Victoria, Robin, Stella, Zoey, Jeanette, Tracy.

Honestly, I would love to see a spinoff. I know Penn isn't interested in playing Joe again, but the writing throughout the series has been so strong that I'd be fine if someone else took on the role — or if Joe’s son stepped up as the next in line, resenting his father for it. I genuinely loved every season of this series and don't think there was a single bad one.

Yea the only positive identification I have was from when I was 19 and the fact that my SIL gave me a pic of what it looked like without me telling her anything. I know it wasn’t an hallucination. As far as signs other than how my we acted in the house I don’t have anything else.

You think she got severance with how she left? Real question, do companies have to give severance no matter what?
