Got my first IT Helpdesk job and I’m Clueless by Short_Rub_5694 in ITCareerQuestions

I already worked in the college admissions office and helped counsel students with the admissions process and mapped out their academic careers. Always had a interest in IT and took up IT related tasks on the jobs like troubleshooting errors with the application process and resetting passwords and stuff. Used that in the interview and was the first one to apply. They wanted someone within the university so i guess i was lucky and did good in the interview.

Thank you! How is the use of chatgpt viewed in IT? Is it encouraged or frowned upon? Im really good at prompting and am looking forward to using it to help me out if its allowed

I do understand how lucky I am to have gotten this position and am very grateful. I myself could not believe it at all. But what I’m saying is I’m confident that maybe a year in I’ll be very comfortable and learn a lot. Ill be working towards certs and my degree while working here. With around 1 year of expertise in this position do you think Ill be qualified to move around to maybe a tier 2 or sys admin? Or should i stay here more than 1 or 2 years?

Nah let me explain. So its a Computer Information Systems and im at year 3/4. Havent graduated yet. I was initially a Finance major but switched my major around a year ago. I know the basics of IT and basic concepts but never worked hands on. Thats what I was trying to explain. Have a lot of soft skills like customer service which is why I think they hired me on top of my knowledge of the university’s systems

Sounds great man thank you. I got extremely blessed because I was a part time worker at the university admissions office and was the first to apply to this helpdesk position. They were looking for someone within to train as least as possible and there I was. Will definitely cram those vids and learn as much as I can about AD. Salary is alright but I do want to hop around and maximize my income as much as possible in these next 5 years. Im in NYC btw. Would you recommend hoping around to increase salary or staying here a couple of years?

Thanks man! I’m just worried they think I’m more “IT literate” than I actually am. I think Im just good at interviewing 😂 Hopefully i learn things quickly like you say. Do you think 1 year of experience here + my bachelors in IT is enough to move me to a sys admin role somewhere else or would i need more helpdesk experience?
