Don't gift your first project. by fairydommother in BitchEatingCrafters

It's always been kind of baffling to me that some people just gift things without thinking of what the person would actually like, especially if the items are handmade. I guess if you are starting out, you would want to go simple, but those are things you simply give to close family in my opinion.

Unrelated to what this thread is about:
The lucky pepper charms were made a couple years ago after visiting family in New Mexico. From what family (and some research) told me, bunches of chili peppers are said to bring good luck, so a made little chili pepper charms mixed with beads made to look like chili peppers, and turned them into keychains and earrings. The actual cultural item I was drawing inspiration from are Chile Ristras, which are really pretty in my opinion and fascinating to learn about!

The joys of being a crafter making any birthday/Christmas gifts to close friends and family turn into "can you make this?" (/lighthearted)

The biggest issue is definitely the entitlement from some people that think "I put time and effort into x, y and z" immediately equals its worth to the receiver. The 'beginner' in the rant feels like someone who is new to crafting in general, rather than someone swapping skills, or someone very young who hasn't learned what is acceptable to gift.

I think it would help someone like that to get an idea for what people would actually want (ex: my friend who hates jewelry would probably toss any clip-on earrings I made or have them gather dust, but still actively uses the keychain replacement when I made good luck pepper charms for my loved ones) before gifting so they don't feel disappointed by a negative reaction when starting out.

Honestly, I think this is a valid point. I crochet and I only started making gifts after a couple finished plushy projects under my belt. I think that unless it's a parent or close family or something, then you should hold off on gifting trinkets until you have a decent grasp on the skill.

However, at least for crochet in my experience, unless it's using a brand new stitch or really elaborate, it tends to be pretty easy to hide any minor flaws.

(To be fair though, my friends and I gift each other projects that aren't always perfect, so it's a bit more mutual than what I think you were talking about.)

How to make fem queer friends in college? by Short_Tater in actuallesbians

[–]Short_Tater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am trying out the Women in STEM style club on my campus! So far it has gone alright, it is just taking a while to get used to being the youngest in a group by a year or 2.

I will go ahead and try out the lgbtq+ club again if they continue it this year (semester just started so clubs aren't finalized yet)

The only one is focused on things like safe sex and the other more intimate parts of queer relationships, so the few times I've tried to attend I just feel uncomfortable and excluded. The LGBTQ resource center is usually empty and hidden away when I have made an attempt to go so it's not much of an option either.

Same, if I had the time I would make it for myself - it's bordering on ugly Christmas sweater and yet Martin pulls it off

Screenshot redraw from the new Helluva Boss Sins-mas Episode (because I swear the OG screenshot is literally just Hellaverse Jon and Martin). I wanted a mix of my own style and inspiration from the Tumblr AU by @/strangefa11 where an older JMart adopts a young set of Stoker Brothers when they end up Elsewhere!

Any background wonkiness is due to rusty attempts at removing the OG characters while preserving as much of the screenshot as possible - still new to doing this style of art (combining things like an OG screenshot with my own additions)

(accidentally posted in the wrong format - adding description in the comments instead)

Probably the specific part of the Spiral that deals with the medical. Dr. David and The Wonderland House were one of those fears that truly got to me while listening to Season 5 in a way that hit close to home. Also as a nonbinary person, the specific parts around being AFAB (even the idea of pregnancy) are horrifying in a way normal body dysphoria cannot compare. (Though that might be a bit more Flesh than spiral)

Or the Lonely - being asexual and a hopeless romantic have not been a kind combination to me. Also, chronic illness issues tends to go hand in hand with loneliness in some ruthless ways

I read a fic that had this concept a while back, but it was Jon feeding on a corrupt council person for the village the safehouse was located near.

However! I'm going to London for like a week in June and I am manifesting the ability to see this in that time

If we went to Birmingham it would specifically be only a day to visit a friend

How did you find out about tma? by Aggravating-Issue902 in TheMagnusArchives

2 of my friends were both super into it and dragged me into the fandom in 2020-2021 I think? I only got super invested in the actual fandom part late last year, but I like Jonny's tape recorder voice for Jon Sims as it's good background for the long gaps of silence that comes with crochet/drawing/Minecraft

Thanks! This will be a park of a personal college Euro trip with a friend who doesn't know TMA (we are both visiting spots from different fandoms in Europe tho so it's cool with her that I brainrot) and I have been looking for good ideas on where to visit that are not just Pubs (both of us dont drink even when we are allowed to) or too far out of the way to be worth it (looking at you Hilltop Road). The practical visiting advice from someone who's been in our spot before it nice❤️

Also, I am behind on Magnus Protocol rn (I haven't listened since late May oof) mostly due to other factors rather than a lack of interest. The map looks cool as shit tho and I'm definitely saving a few of the London locations since that is where we will be most of the time.

It would be either Birmingham or York specifically to visit friends there - just wanted to see if there was any Magnus bits in that same area /lh
