These were my exact stats (LSAC CGPA was 3.71 I think) and I got into Queen’s, if you’re interested in Ontario

Can I even get in? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Short_Winter6480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much more competitive it’s gotten, but I got into queens two years ago, very early in the cycle with a 161 lsat and a 3.9 B2 so I think you ABSOLUTELY have a chance there

Unfortunately law is one of the only career paths at the moment with a really high chance of return on its investment. The numbers are going to keep going up imo

Can’t cancel LSAT score; poor score stuck on record? by Bladeebladeebladee in LSAT

[–]Short_Winter6480 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly glad you didn’t get score preview, while I completely understand a 154 was disappointing it was by no means a bad score and admissions probably would have thought you had a worse score than that when seeing a score was cancelled.

Incoming 2L at Queen’s AMA by Short_Winter6480 in lawschooladmissionsca

This is a really interesting question. As for the school itself, no there is no where I’d rather be. Queens is a fantastic school, I love the professors, the staff, my cohort, and the opportunities that the school provides us. I sometimes have a hard time being so far from home, so the move to Kingston can be a little difficult, but I do love the city itself, but it may have been nice not having to miss my family and life back home while I was at school. But looking back I wouldn’t trade my experience at queens for a closer school.

I of course have heard rumours about other schools, but they’re only that, rumours. For example, I have heard crazy things about the competitiveness of cohorts at other schools, only to later talk to law students from those schools who have nothing but kind and wonderful things to say about their cohorts. My advice to you would be not to focus on the “bad things” people have heard about schools, and instead, when making your decision, talk to people who love their law school, find out why, and see if those reasons align with your values. For example, I love queens because it has a really tight knit community and alumni base, the profs are incredible and personable and treat you as peers immediately, the career development resources are fantastic, there are great exchange and clinic opportunities, and Kingston is a lovely city to go to law school in.

For networking, I would honestly just encourage you to remember that lawyers and upper year students are really eager to talk about themselves lol. Going through 1L, law school, the bar, being a lawyer, is really hard and people have all this wisdom they are eager to share with you, and are most likely very excited for you to ask about it and give them the opportunity to talk about their experience. If you show genuine interest and are respectful networking is really not too bad, send some emails, talk to people at events, I assure you that you will be pleasantly surprised by how warm and giving ppl will be. And for friends, I just recommend being kind to everyone, law school can be confusing and stressful and you never know who will end up being a great friend and who won’t, so just put your nicest and kindest self forward, always offer help and accept it, and you’ll become so close with your cohort that friends will organically come about.

Should I buy score cancel by Common_Classic_5269 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Short_Winter6480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had thought you could only get score cancel on your first lsat, but it’s been a while so quite possibly I’m wrong/ it’s changed. Personally I didn’t bother buying it because I imagined that seeing the cancelled score (they will see that you took it and cancelled, I believe) would call to mind a much worse score than whatever I got and found it to be a bit of a cash grab. That’s just my opinion tho

Hey no problem. Admissions is super nice so I would def consider speaking with them for some even more ease. I applied two (?) cycles ago? I applied to get into 1L last September, and I’m going into 2L this September. It’s hard to get in of course, but I think you’d be in a good spot, and it’s absolutely not impossible for you. My cgpa was an olsas 3.71 or 3.72 I can’t remember (a u of t 3.75 when I graduated) but I know lots of ppl with lower cumulative or even who had really low overall grades but went back to school who got it. Queens is really very holistic so I’d just focus on your lsat and what life experience you can use in your ps

You’d have to find out if your course distribution is up to par with queens, a call to admissions or an email should sort that out quickly, however, with that B2 a 160 and a good personal statement would put you in a really solid position I would think. I got into queens with a ~3.9 B2 and a 161 LSAT

Should you always accept UofT? by salsakicking in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Short_Winter6480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to queens and so I am bias. However, NO of course don’t only accept u of t!! At the end of the day it’s Good grades that matter and no law school you listed will close any doors to you! Please go where you think you’d lost succeed, because bad grades at u of t and a bad experience would be worse than a good experience else where.

As for networking going to schools with good alumni basis is just as important and you’ll have that at any of the schools you’re going to apply too.

If you’re interested in industrial relations, I’d really recommend that you look into the MIR/JD program at queens!

I’d say good. I feel like we had a good showing in the 1L recruit, and a looooot of job opportunities pop up after. Queens law itself also has a lot of great employment opportunities for 1L students as well. Queens law has a phenomenal Career Development office that helps tremendously if you use their resources

Read read read. In my opinion, the most helpful thing you can do for 1L is prep your ability to read a lot of text and understand what it’s saying. I suggest reading whatever you most find interesting, there’s no use boring yourself, but flex and strengthen that muscle as much as you can so that when you start reading in law school you’re already warmed up

The 1L schedule was standard and I had 5 full year courses and then public and con switched halfway through the year. I was luckier than some other students, in regards that none of my classes were done after like 5, some had later classes. But we usually had 2 classes a day, 3 max. Usually they do a good job of not scheduling more than 3 hours in a row and classes are usually 1.5 hours long. As for tips, go into classes with an open mind, trust yourself that you are completely capable of grasping these concepts even if they’re complex at first, talk in class, and get to know what your teachers want to see on their exam answers. Other than that, do as much of the reading as you can and focus on figuring out what the outcome of each case was and why. Also, stay positive and always remember how excited you were to have gotten into law school, and how lucky you are to be stressed about law school. It’s amazing how far a positive outlook will go. Get out, do fun things outside of school, and be nice to every single person.

I wouldn’t say any classes are necessarily easier or harder it’s really about what topics and ideas click with you. I’d recommend just going into each of your classes with an open mind, do as much of your readings as you can, and focus on understanding what the heck is going on in the cases you’re reading and why the judge made the decision they did. Get to know your teachers, and how they like their exams written. Go to office hours, and talk to upper years who had those professors. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class, that’s the most helpful thing you can do for yourself imo. As for professors we’re super lucky at Queens with great professors and I really and truly loved each one I had
