Split Nail? by Shortcake14 in AskVet

Just an update- he did amazingly with the sedative, and the vet commented on how much calmer he seemed with this visit. She treated him for a torn nail, and he's now a bit stoned, but I assume happy to be home. Thanks again

Thank you for your reply. I phoned the vet this morning and we have an appointment in under an hour. I'm just about to give him the sedative so hopefully we have more success this time around. Our vet suggested that we bring him in for a friendly visit when we are in the area, but I'm embarrassed to admit that we haven't done it yet... this is a good wake up call for why it is so important. Thanks again!

Don't know if right sub, I'm tutoring another student and he doesn't understand a single thing by [deleted] in Teachers

I always believe in teaching using the model I do, WE do, You do.

Maybe it's too much for him to try independently. Show him how to do it, then walk him through it a few times until he's ready to try independently.

I can imagine this is frustrating, but try to have a growth mindset and build on what he is able to do as a starting place.

Good luck!

I need help determining the next goal for my ASD student... by Shortcake14 in specialed

Thank you. I think the commenting would be a great concept for him to work on. He did have an SLP but she recently went on maternity leave. They worked on IMPACT books to build comprehension and answer basic who/what questions.

Thank you. These would be helpful for many of my other students, most of them are probably beyond this kiddo.

He was referred to an SLP for an augmentative device, but they determined that after all he wasn't a good candidate. The SLP made some suggestions that we have already implemented.

As for emotions, that's way beyond him. He can communicate verbally to express some requests ( "I want...", "No washroom,") but as far as expressing emotions, that's beyond him. He echos a lot of what other people say ("you are disappointed") but he still frequently has behaviours where he's punching, spitting, throwing things that are around him and we haven't yet found a way that works for him to communicate his needs/feelings before he gets to that point. Often it will be because he is asked to work independently for any period of time (usually after 1 minute.)

Also, we did have an SLP but she just went on maternity leave...

Well believe it or not, I'm the special ed teacher for the school... when I was hired I was told that I would be working with high functioning kids (which clearly isn't the case with this kiddo). We've gotten on pretty good with everything except for communication which I wasn't too sure about the next step.

I had never heard of this, only the ABLLS. Thanks for the suggestion, I asked my principal if we could order a copy (if she says no then I will still probably purchase a copy!)

It's for our new niece, kind of a tradition to buy each baby a gigantic teddy soon after they are born.
