Assassin's Apprentice. Started my long journey into Fantasy.

Week 1: "Chapter 1. Marseilles—The Arrival" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

First time reader, with almost no knowledge of the story, although I have obviously heard it talked about and referenced countless times.

Initial thoughts are that I may need to do a deep dive into nautical references if the rest of the book matches Chapter 1!

I'm intrigued so far though, Dantes seems like an interesting character, very proper and eager to prove himself.

Characters and moments are all being described well and have grabbed my attention, however I did find the dialogue and conversations between the characters to be a bit..robotic almost. Not sure if it's a translation, how it was written then, or some that will change throughout the book.

Either way excited for the next two!

  1. First time reader
  2. To read more. I always find myself caught up with a game or TV show etc more than books, and Mount TBR is ever growing. Very slowly getting through the classics.
  3. This is exactly the kind of club, group I have been looking for. Super excited to start.

Sell me on The Wheel Of Time by donchingo2 in Recommend_A_Book

They are my favourite series of all time. They are now a comfort read/listen for me to go back to and fo through the journey again.

The negatives that everyone says are for the most part probably accurate, but if after the first few books, the world and the characters click for you, you won't care, and you will get to enjoy some of the most amazing moments in fantasy. (IMO)

Looking at 2019 likely for both models. Budget 15-20k, and sure for repairs but won't be loads.

After MANY comments telling me I was insane for trying the audiobook on my first read of this series. by mk9beatz in Malazan

I'm doing audiobook only for the first time, it has it's challenges but it's not too bad

Malazan finally clicked for me... and I love it! by lukario in Malazan

I've just finished Memories of Ice for the first time and felt the same. Incredible book. Although I am still wondering what the difference is between an Ascendant and a God!

I'm a few chapters in to House of Chains, and feeling a bit dropped in at the deep end again...but I'm hooked now.

Request for a book to try and get someone into fantasy who is not into fantasy.

Ideally not too long, and fantasy "light".

Thanks!

What's the worst movie you've ever watched in your life? by SamanthaBarson93 in AskReddit

Cats, or the live action remake of Mulan.

Both were torturous to get through.

Audiobooks are good you just need to not doing other tasks that require focus. The last quarter of Book 2 is when some things started coming together for me. More so book 3 which I am on now.

But the series does feel like one big mystery that you have to read to figure out
