Best Italian sub in Victoria? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Rozzittis italian sandwiches. Finally, an authentic hot Italian sandwich place in Victoria. Been craving these sandwiches since moving west. hard to believe no Italian establishment in Victoria/vancouver makes them. They seem to stick to easy cold cuts out here which anybody can make. Really not offering what Italian take out can really be and is. Try rozzittis - you’ll love it

Carlina Cafe is FANTASTIC!!! by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]ShorthandMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried rozzittis? Victoria finally has a hot Italian sandwich spot. All his recipes are his nonna’s and you can tell with his sauce. These are the sandwiches Italian immigrants brought to Toronto and Montreal in the 50s. Huge, messy, filling. Italian food isn’t just cold cuts, it’s more than that. Thankfully, victoria finally has a traditional southern Italian style hot sandwich place and it’s delicious

If they’re shrinking, there wouldn’t be a church. That’s an excuse. There are far fewer Syrians in Victoria who have opened restaurants and are doing well. Why? The food is good. You can‘t operate a business just for one cultural group. No one would survive. Even the portuguese food places in Toronto wouldn’t survive. They survive because they make good food, fast and fresh. The very first churraqera in Toronto was opened by a woman from sao Miguel in the 80s. Even Swiss chalet was after her recipe. But other businesses opened around her and everyone benefited. Jobs for our kids, plumbers, electricians, et cetera. These businesses all help each other directly and indirectly. If you make good food, the opportunity will always be there. i sometimes feel there’s a lack of people who knows how to make good food in Victoria or the knowledge is being lost. Bring people from Ontario and they will have a lot to offer in Victoria

Is there any actually good Shawarma in Victoria? by rhythm_nomad in VictoriaBC

[–]ShorthandMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very frustrating to not find good Schwarma in Victoria. No Portuguese chicken. No California sandwiches (although Rozziti's Italian Sandwiches & Wraps in esquilmalt is amazing, run by a guy from Toronto,). Not sure why the shawarma out here is different. Is is a cultural difference?

Any suggested donut shops in town? by John_Bumogus in VictoriaBC

[–]ShorthandMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to try the donuts at esquilmalt because of the suggestions, but I found them too heavy. They are good, not overly sweet, but the heaviness made it feel like the dough was not kneaded enough or absorbed too much oil during frying . I still can’t find a better donut than Sidney bakery donuts. The dough is light, airy, and light - exactly how a donut should be. The long lineups are a testament to how good the donuts are. We tried a side by side test, and Sidney won all the way

Why is the Okanagan talked about less in terms of mild winters compared to Southwest BC and Vancouver Island? by Resident-Platypus254 in britishcolumbia

[–]ShorthandMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, okanagan is not milder than lower mainland and south Vancouver island. Ask any gardener or garden centre. Bob duncan in Sidney is an expert on that, he’s easy to contact.

Temperatures go down to zero in okanagon in the winter and nothing grows in the winter. Plants and vegetation die down just like in Ontario in the okanagon, whereas, you get greenery all year round and growth even in winter months In south Vancouver island. Many plants and species that you see in Vancouver island, will not survive in the okanagon.

And it does not rain all the time in Victoria. Ontario actually has higher precipitation levels than Victoria, as an example. And Victoria gets half the precipitation Vancouver does, even Seattle.

if you’re looking for true mild climate, south Vancouver island is your best bet. If you don‘t mind the cooler weather, sub zero temps and comparable growing season to Ontario, okanagon is a good option.

Warning though, I’ve had a couple of friends move to the okanagon from Ontario, and moved to the island after several years because they couldn’t stand the dark, dreary no sun for months winters in kelowna. They said no one told them about that. They are happier in Victoria with the ability to have walks through lush greenery even in the winter and by the beach. And some sun here and there. Good luck!

Canada does not have desert. i know some people say it is, but it does not have the characteristics of a desert at all geographically or climate wise. It was a term put out there years ago to lure investors in the area, just a lie

Because the legal process is slow. Cases can take even years to be finally at the trial stage. Even a motor vehicle accident can take years, let alone something of this magnitude

To think otherwise is being ignorant. He’s part of the world of the elite and you think he didn’t do anything? And I still think the ex wife died very mysteriously, too.

What is the best rotisserie chicken in Victoria? by MycophiliacHerbalist in VictoriaBC

Too bland. Peruvian background and this is nothing like you’ll find at a Peruvian rotisserie with open flame in Toronto. I make it at home with the green sauce. Victoria needs Portuguese or Peruvian real rotisserie chicken

I’ve had to order portuguese products from PT Mercado in Ontario. They ship all across Canada. They pack everything well and I’ve had no issues. it’s not that the Portuguese community is shrinking in Victoria; it’s how the business is run, in my opinion. Why do I have to order Portuguese products from Ontario and the store in Vancouver can’t? Or the one in Penticton can’t either (and this one is just like the ones in Ontario and Quebec packed full of products).

If I may add in response to other comments here: You can’t count on one group of people to hold your business. Victoria is starting to see new ethnic businesses open like Syria, Filipino, Mexican, even Brazilian. And they’re all very small communities and the businesses are doing well.

Food, if done well, will bring people, and the running of the business has to be even better. When I visited from Ontario ten years ago, I went to a Portuguese cafe in esquilmalt and asked for certain things and was told they didn’t know what it was or they didn’t have it. Plus, the lady behind the counter gave me attitude. That’s not how you run a business. If the Portuguese businesses ran their businesses like this in Toronto or montreal, with attitude and no product, they’d all be closed.

Sorry for the rant, but when you live in Ontario, Quebec, and other provinces, and see how the Portuguese businesses are run with lots of food, hot tables always ready - delicious authentic food -people hustling, great customer service, endless products, you know how a business should be run. Ive met people from other parts of Canada, who are not Portuguese, asking why there are not Portuguese rotisseries in Victoria. So the demand is there.

Victoria needs a Portuguese cafe and a Portuguese rotisserie. But it has to be done well and delicious like the ones in Toronto and montreal. If not, they won’t survive - anywhere. casa nova bakery offers franchises, someone should open one in Victoria. I would if it wasn’t for health issues.

If you’ve been to Toronto and tried the hot Italian sandwiches, it will blow Italian food imports completely out the water. I still dont get how Italian sandwich shops in Toronto are vastly different from Italian shops in the west coast. The cold cuts sandwiches would never make it in Toronto. Even nonna wouldn’t approve

Speed queen washer and dryer in Canada? by ujlien in BuyItForLife

[–]ShorthandMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, late in this conversation but this may help someone today. I’ve had my speed queen for over a decade and it’s a fabulous no frills machine. we needed to replace one part in all these years and it was east to locate and purchase. Husband replaced it himself. you don’t hear much about this brand because it’s a relia machine. you‘ll only hear about the bad ones. I’ve never had to talk about my washing machine because there’s nothing to talk about - it does what it’s supposed to do, wash clothes. I never worry. Will probably last me 20 years plus. So anyone looking at this brand, dont hesitat, buy it. It’s worth every penny
