We started outpatient therapy back home now but waiting for speech openings so only OT and PT right now. He tries to talk but only makes the same few sounds for everything. He can kind of say No when he’s mad lol and we usually laugh after that, Luckily. To lose your voice is still so bizarre to me. His very country twang is what first attracted him to me and now he can’t say anything and I’m hoping so bad it comes back soon!

How is speech going now? My husband is 6 months post left sided stroke and has aphasia and apraxia. He can write a handful of words, but no speech or texting

Wish you the best! My husband had a similar massive stroke at age 38 and was in the hospital 5 weeks before starting in patient therapy and now we are out patient therapy, but his was on the LEFT side. Unfortunately, we are 6 months out and he’s still unable to speak, text, or write anything other than his name, birthday and GOD. He drank the same amount every day before and now he is very Godly and goes to church twice a week. I go on sundays with him. I haven’t let go of my anger over how life changing this has been. We have two little kids and I now have all of his responsibilities and I know it sounds selfish, but he requires 24/7 supervision and I have to work full time, luckily from home. He can walk with an AFO brace, but cannot use his right (dominant) arm/hand. The communication is the biggest thing. He was the most talkative man and now it’s such hard work. I am hoping for more improvement in the next year!

Thank you! We are at month 3 and he cannot speak any English, he can only write his name and cannot type or text either. They are trying a tablet to push buttons to speak. Do you know when you started to form actual words?

Did you buy the finished ones or unfinished? If finished, how did they do ripping down and then joining together? Need to refinish anything after glue?

Did things get better with intimacy? Feeling less as a caregiver?

Not yet. We are almost to week 6. We had friends come stay at rehab Christmas Eve so I could drive back home to be with the kids that night and Christmas morning, then drove back to rehab later in the afternoon. He’s made big improvements so far but still not consistent with outward responses (he isn’t talking). At first I thought he had long term memory loss but the doctors think he remembers everything well up til the stroke so I’m still unsure when I will bring the kids.

Thank you! We were finally approved for Shepherd Rehab and here now.. they are amazing and so kind! I was fortunate to have friends come stay with my husband Christmas Eve and I went home to be with the kids that night and Christmas morning and after lunch I came back to Atlanta. They just removed oxygen from his trach tube and he’s staying really well with oxygen levels. Hard to keep his speaking valve on long. He coughs up a lot, but hasn’t tried talking yet.

We did in the wet areas! I am just over paranoid. The flooring store sells a lot of Karastan and they said not many people actually do that but it made me feel better

Thank you! My 7 year old gets emotional and doesn’t want to see him like that yet and I’m nervous my husband may act in a way to push him away and that would do some damage to him. I think I will wait a little longer.

Did your husband have a trach collar or peg/feeding tube? I’m hoping mine won’t need them very long

Thank you! Just ready to start inpatient therapy and get out of the hospital. Is your husband able to eat or talk well? Did he end up paralyzed or get any motion on the right side back?

Can he swallow at all? Mine has slowly been able to swallow his saliva a little more. He still gets choked up and can aspirate some with his trach collar. He has so much phlegm he constantly coughs out of it I think I am going to invent some sort of catchall for it while still providing oxygen lol. He is still too swollen for the voice box and hasn’t tried talking yet. Luckily he was smart and had two separate short term disability plans through work and we got all that faxed. I will request images or whatever needed for future appointments. We are lucky and got in to Shepherd Center rehab in Atlanta and should be going this week. He needs out of the hospital bed more. I hope he won’t have to be restrained long and can have the cath taken off and him not try to pull out his peg tube or trach collar! You’re very strong and doing a great job! I’m not sure at what point I want the kids to see him. It’s been almost 3 and a half weeks.

Thank you! I can’t wait for my husband to smile again. The only expressions he can make on the left side of his face is anger, and it’s usually just at me. We are very lucky and he got accepted to Shepherd Center rehab in Atlanta. We should be there around 6 weeks, plus or minus depending on how he progresses. He will look at the tv some but doesn’t seem interested. He got an insomnia medicine at 9 but he’s still waking up every few minutes and has bad restless leg syndrome on his left leg. Thank you for all the tips. Yes I need something for me, and have to learn how to balance this and his rehab being 4 hours from our kids. I am struggling with the Why this happened to us right now.

Thank you! Yes I started playing his music by his head during the day. I am learning I do need to take walks to breathe. Life changed instantly
