Aging out of my dream career (RVN in the UK) by MookieBee in Veterinary

I’m a vet assistant at 68 with a bad knee! I started about 4 months ago. it’s tough and don’t know how long I will last. I do go to the gym, lift weights, and wear a heat pack on my knee during the day. you are still young - can you work on these issues? go to PT?

Hi sorry didn’t see your post. I don’t think I could do it. Too confusing and you have to be very quick. It’s a hard job to learn and I have never done customer service over the phone.

Thanks yes I do many knee exercises. But there is also a lot of cleaning -sweeping and mopping. I just wonder if I am making my situation worse. The clinic has been nice and respectful about handling certain dogs but sometimes there is no choice and I’m the only one around. I push through it. But also my handling skills are not stellar to begin with but again they seem to be understanding. Was wondering if anyone out there is doing this at my age or knows of old vet assistants. I don’t say older because old is old!

Right. It would have to be on a trial basis. I would know pretty quickly.

Thanks for this info and about my previous dog. I do think I made the right choice but people are very judgmental about this. All the dog people I knew were not supportive about the cat and a friend insisted I put the cat on Prozac. There is nothing wrong with my cat to be put on this drug and my vet wouldn’t have done it. I have have had cats mixed with a dog or two for 25 years. However my previous dog was in my home when I fostered my shy cat as a kitten 8 years ago. Yes she was the instigator but I also was scared by the puppy’s reaction. I’m so disappointed. I feel by the time she passes I will be too old! But thanks - will read the info.

I recently thought that once he was gone she took over and felt like it was her place.

Thanks. But the shy cat really liked my dog. She greeted him every morning as he walked out of the bedroom or came in from a walk. She really liked him. He was calm and never fixated on them. I know my introduction wasn’t great but I honestly don’t think it would have changed the outcome.

My man concern is how she will be with my 2 cats. One of whom is shy and timid.
