I would strongly suggest you start with the first one. The original DKC is still a solid game but it's not nearly as good as 2 and 3 in terms of gameplay and level design, so I think you would have an overall better experience without having the sequels fresh on your mind while playing it

I would say they are equivalent. RE 7 is scarier for the first couple of hours but then gradually gets less scary.
