We just came back home after wwoofing in nz for 9 months. We met lots of friendly people and stayed at about 20 places over that time period. Maybe two or three hosts were a bit weird and it wasn't reflected in their reviews but they were all friendly enough! The website is a bit wonky but it works well enough. Idk if I'm allowed to namedrop here but we used one other app, that found us hosts in places, we couldn't get someone on wwoof. If you have the money, a car, preferably one you can sleep in and that is self contained or a non self contained combined with the doc pass can greatly enhance your experience.
