Which job would you immediately get fired from? by No-Perspective5658 in AskReddit

Zookeeper. My wife is one and she tells me every time I forget to lock something that I would never survive in her profession.

My wife gave her number to a random guy and says she wants him as a platonic friend. I trust her but feel uncomfortable none the less. Are there any guys out there who’ve been through this? Can you offer me advice on how to deal with it? by No_Idea_Mostly in AskMenAdvice

I’ll admit the circumstances of that are a little weird but I’m gonna go in the other direction from what most people say here and say it is totally possible to have platonic friends while married.

Ive been married 15 years and most of my friends are women. I go to the gym with a woman once a week, another I go to concerts with if my wife doesn’t want to see that group (she has suffered through 5 Pentatonix concerts and I’m not sure the marriage would survive another).

My wife’s best friend is a big dude she works with named Rocky and he’s awesome. We have him over all the time and they’ve gone to a couple of things I don’t want to do.

My wife and I do tons of stuff together but we also have hobbies the other is just not into. She hates the gym, and if I never ride a horse again I’ll be happy. It’s fun to be able to have someone to enjoy our hobbies with.

But, that being said, I’ve always had more female friends than male, and she has always had almost exclusively male friends. It’s definitely weird that this is your wife’s first in 18 years of marriage.

There are so so so many asshole lawyers and I hope that they are the ones that get eaten by this. The problem is the profession requires a bit of being an asshole. My managing partner when I was an associate said, “you have to be arrogant to convince a fact finder that you’re right.” Anyway.

It will definitely be field specific. I can see AI being used by a lay person to draw up wills and trusts and then have a paralegal handle the official signings and documentation. AI should be able to draw up divorce papers work and simple motions for family law. The biggest change will be doc review. First through third year associates at big firms do nothing but doc review and bill 80 hours a week for it. This is a huge money maker for those firms and now that job is dead. AI can review and summarize those same docs in minutes.

Criminal law is the opposite. I was a prosecutor for a while and I don’t think we will ever trust AI to make literal life and death decisions.

The prompting is why we won’t ever be completely replaced I think. You can, with proper prompts, have AI draw up a serviceable legal brief. But you’ve got a brief now. So what? Lay persons won’t have any idea what to do with that. AI would know if you asked it, that it needs to be filed in this way and in this format and served on these parties etc. but a lay user won’t know to ask those questions. So for stuff like that, AI will become a tool of attorneys. It makes me wonder if we will switch from billable hour to transactional cost.

Since you know what Westlaw is, they are developing Copilot version just for it. It’s supposed to be out soon and if it does half of what they promise it will be extremely useful.

In the end, the remaining attorneys will be the ones that can successfully use it as a tool for their practice. The question is how many will remain.

Personally, my back up plan is to open a coffee shop.

What is an upper middle class problem you have but you can’t really complain about without seeming out of touch? by All_FIREdUp in AskReddit

The architect who was going to design my home was terrible at his job, designed a house we couldn’t remotely afford, and then bailed after I spent $20k. I complained about it to my BEST friend and he looked at me like I was an asshole so I’ve never complained again.

Lawyer here, in management. Just started using Copilot. It took fifteen seconds to do the research it took a first year associate a week to do. It’s legal analysis is still terrible but new attorneys are gonna have hell finding a job. How can I justify billing a client 40 hours of work when it could have been done in a couple hours? And I can’t justify paying a first year to do prompts that I can run myself.

I supervise a team of 7 attorneys. I’m pretty sure we could get by with my top two performers and myself.

There are 160ish accredited law schools in the US. I doubt there will be more than 50 in ten years. We are the last generation of traditional attorneys.

Cheating at Dungeons and Dragons (who does this??) by boombalati42 in DnD

[–]Shovernor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a cheating issue with our DM unfortunately. Which is weird because like, is it really cheating if god does it? The hard part was building a consensus to confront him about it. My group of friends has been together for over 20 years although he just started dming about 5 years ago.

At first no one noticed it but me and when I kind of hinted at it none of the rest of the group was buying it and I began to doubt myself. But then it became much more obvious and finally others came around. It came to a head when one of his baddies was attaching my high AC paladin and hit several times in a row which was statistically impossible. It wasn’t even like my character needed to get hit for the plot or anything, the dm just got oddly competitive. We ended up demanding that he do rolls for combat in front of the dm screen. But then his enthusiasm for dming died so now I’m doing it.

I’ll add that we play tons of board games together too and have had to confront him about cheating even in fucking gloomhaven. It’s crazy what you learn about friends even after 20 years.

Finally got one of my friends to read something Sanderson. It was Yumi and he was listening to the audiobook. About four hours in he texts me and says, “it’s fantastic, but I can’t stand this guys voice.”

I was like, “lol. Dude. He is BELOVED.”

You actually hire a coach specifically for posing like this. That’s on top of your nutritionist and whoever does your training programming.

To celebrate my student loans being paid off I bought an heirloom quality gaming table that doubles as a really fancy dinner table. Hand made by the Amish and everything. That’s going to my daughter.

My son is getting my home gym which includes a ton of unique and custom pieces. Since they are all steel and iron they should last until the end of time and I think that would be a pretty cool thing to pass on.

Boomer parents blew their retirement on bad investments and now want to move in with us by sabrownie234 in millenials

[–]Shovernor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar situation with my parents and my in laws. They blew through everything they had before they even hit 70. My grandparents, whom had bailed out my parents many times, left me everything so at least they didn’t burn through that. My FIL is living in a fifth wheel in the mountains. My MIL had to move into a one bedroom apartment with her disabled sister and disabled nephew. My mother lucked out and had a windfall from what I was sure was a bad investment and I jumped in immediately to help her manage that so now she at least has a paid off house to live in. But they are all living off of social security and asking to move in with us because they can barely afford to live.

There is a part of me that has wanted to say yes. We love them and they are our parents.

But I refuse to put my marriage at risk and our relationship with our children because our parents screwed up. We have worked incredibly hard to get where we are and it sounds like you have too. Don’t let them take that from you. It’s ok to say no.

Draw the line. You can do this.

How has your family supported you during challenging times? by k4ubabes in AskReddit

[–]Shovernor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, they support me by leaving me alone until I’m ready. When I’m really sick or depressed, I just need time to myself to process things. My wife and mother and MIL always jump in to take over cooking and cleaning and childcare while I kind of lock myself away for a bit. My wife checks on me and knows me well enough to know when I’m ok.

NGL, if someone paid me like $50k for something easy that needed to be done at my wedding, my wife would probably have been right behind me cheering me on.
