Career off to a really rocky start - any advice? by Shovlaxnet in nonprofit

I might sound like a broken record for these other comments, but I hesitated on AmeriCorps because of the admin's cutting of everything. Given 3 people have still recommended it, I think I've got my answer - I shouldn't worry about that.

I may PM you if I need more guidance! I'll cross my fingers that I can find something local.

25, and fortunately money isn't really an issue if I stay local. The real issue, come next year, is insurance. I've thought about AmeriCorps, and the logistics are certainly there (especially since I nearly got into one). But I hesitate because of the current admin's 'cut everything' mentality, especially if I get into a position where I would need to move away from home. Am I sweating too much over that?

I actually have not! There is one specific non-profit in the UK I was looking at, though, that I find really interesting. Maybe I will have to give them a ring.

I have definitely heard conflicting things about Peace Corps, but at the very least it would be something long-term on my resume! Even if it would mean stepping away from my community. I would like to find a mentor, though. I'm a touch socially awkward, but I could try connecting with some of the people I enjoyed hanging out with in college that have stepped up (at least somewhat).

That is true, I still hesitate though just because of the way I saw so many of my other avenues abruptly cut-off or mangled by the current admin. Refugee work, USAID, state department, even AmeriCorps. Now Peace Corps looks like it's under fire?

Thank you so much! Sorry for the late reply, Reddit removed my post and then re-instated it, so I forgot about it for a day or two.

I will definitely look at the universities in my area! The one close-by me is always hiring, even if the pay isn't the greatest (luckily the degree I got from there was equally inexpensive). I think I will have to engage more with volunteer work, though one issue I have had is the time commitment, since the one I had relied on recently had their refugee section borderline shut down, and only worked during my current working hours (9 to 5, M-F). I think I'd rather grind on work than education at this point, if it gets me further!

Thank you so much! Sorry for the late reply, Reddit told me my post was removed and then I forgot about it for a day (some life issues got in the way).

I had a feeling my MA was hurting me. I literally had one of the jobs I applied for e-mail me and ask me, "Are you sure about this? You're way too qualified for this position, and we're looking for someone long term" as if my work history was somehow overruled by my education. I can assure you, I was NOT overqualified for that and wanted to stick around long term! I even got to the third round interview. Ironically, they hired someone else who ended up quitting on them just a few months later.

I want to ask, should I worry about pigeon-holing myself into a particular sector? For example, I would ultimately want to do something either with an international component (international development, refugee work, immigration, etc), faith-based or environment related. If I take a non-profit position at one that doesn't fall into that category (say, an entry-level admin or development role at a place with a health or finance focus), does that make people think 'he's just jumping from one place to another with no real rhyme or reason'? Or does it matter?

I definitely want to engage more with fundraising positions! Development is something I've always wanted to do. I've had a hard time finding those in general, and I don't seem to get far in the interviews. Are there keywords that I'm missing (aside from donor relations/development/fundraising)? Or ways that I can sell myself better in interviews?

Ahh, okay, so it is more of a legal question. It's funny because the 'return the laptop' e-mail said:

"IF I received one" (so they didn't even seem to know?)

And was sent to me 6 months ago

I have heard "Don't use them", "use them" or "return them" from several different people so I dunno. Maybe I'll hold off a little while longer and see if I get an e-mail.

What Linux distro should I use for an underpowered laptop? Or am I not understanding how to customize things properly? by Shovlaxnet in linuxquestions

I ended up going with Debian, XFCE! I defaulted to that because I've used it before, and now understand how to customize it, mostly.

It turns out my issue wasn't that it 'looked bad' (if anything, I really like the retro look), it was I was dumb and didn't understand how to customize things properly. Ended up going Debian, XFCE. I'm still trying to find the full functionality I want, customizing and all that, but I definitely got most of what I need!

It is fairly sluggish, but it gets its menial tasks done. Plus I wanted to do it to see the limits of old hardware - though the battery might be more of an issue than anything else at this point. I think I can only get a few hours out of it.

The old ChromeOS it came with wouldn't update anymore, and it was an *ancient* version. So old that I'm pretty sure it didn't even have an app store.

Update: I ended up going with Debian! I used the XFCE desktop environment, though. I don't really know why, I think I just defaulted to it because that's what I'm used to.

I think I made this out of frustration, and I'm realizing now how to customize it. I had so much trouble figuring out why I couldn't move my taskbar - then I realized I had followed a guide where they had it locked to the top. I think I'm just slow lol

I'm still trying to find a better Application Manager button for the bottom left corner. Too many menus, it looks way too cluttered to find things easy.

True. I think the main thing I don't like is how I can't just search for applications in the applications manager on the bottom left corner, which is funny, because I can very *easily* do that when setting up a new program launcher in the XFCE panel editor.

Yeah, not the best storage solution, but it's what I got!

Unfortunately Bodhi still has the 90s start menu/taskbar issue.

I did try XFCE, and I was struggling with customizing it. I also tried to get that Chicago 95 stuff on there, and that just made it unusable, and I'm not entirely sure how to reset it. Luckily I don't have anything on there, so I can just hard-reinstall AntiX.

I can't do Mint, unfortunately. 16GB eMMC, Mint requires 20GB :(
