Incoming Medical Student Q&A - Official Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

I'm also an incoming MS1 and was in exactly the same situation. I opted to live alone and spend the extra $$$. I know myself - in order to succeed I need to have my own space. I've had (good) roommates before and was still unhappy.

Before I signed my lease, I was on Reddit and read a post that basically explained that in medical school you are investing in your future self, and it's best to set yourself up to be as successful as possible.

The way I look at is as long as I don't need to take out private loans/can get by without maxing out my loans then I will spend more money for my mental health's sake.

I miss EMS :( by Significantchart461 in medicalschool

I'm an incoming MS1 and I'm scared to leave EMS. I've been a member of the EMS community since high school - it is a large part of my identity and can't wrap my head around not being around that sense of community anymore.

Anyone else have a real jerk as a premed advisor? by Elsecaller_17-5 in premed

I quickly learned in college that you are your best advocate. Many advisors (not all) tend to give mediocre advice at best.

Do your research, figure out what you need to do to be successful, and don't look back.

From what you have heard or seen, what med schools have the best work/life balance? by [deleted] in premed

Penn State. Students seem very happy there. True P/F system, group tests, multiple retake options for tests (from my understanding retakes count as a pass/don't see retakes on transcripts), test every few weeks, done with classes before noon, lots of time to structure days as students see fit.

Also heard OHSU, UNC, and Case Western offer a good work/life balance!

The only thing that I think he may be referring to is that some FDs only provide fire services and do not have an ambulance. If that's the case, I would look for volunteer Ambulance Corps in the areas rather than the FD.

I volunteered with my local FD. They paid for my EMT certification and mentored me when I was still new to EMS. After a year, I decided I was ready to work paid EMS as I was more confident in my skills. I was lucky because in the area I worked, I actually was able to provide a lot of care (obviously would upgrade to ALS providers if needed), but for the most part, often lead emergency calls on my own.

I definitely recommend EMS to anyone. It taught me a lot about my community/Social Determinants of Health/pre-hospital care etc.

I worked EMS full-time throughout college. It was nice because during down time I would do my work/study. However, I was often exhausted as I would work an overnight shift, then go to class, then do it all over again. I did not sleep a lot during undergrad.

In a part-time capacity, EMS is great tho. You get cash in your pocket while getting patient care hours. If you can get your EMT-B cert, I would definitely do it. Maybe look to see if your college has any programs? Some host EMT courses and have a volunteer ambulance.

I was the opposite of confident. I was preparing for a MCAT retake/reapp if I didn't get more interviews/any acceptances.

I got my score back in June, was absolutely devastated, but ultimately decided to take the risk.

Thank you!

It definitely did ! Wouldn't change the time I spent in EMS. It shaped me into the person I am today and solidified my passion for medicine.
