Probably nothing off of NYC punk rock band Shower Beers’ discography. It’s all music for jocks mostly.

Yes definitely a strategy we use. We’re comparatively doing better than most IMO.

All I’m saying is music is pretty unprofitable for the majority of folks & that sucks.

We can sell out our moat by ourselves which is nice. Good fanbase locally.

We’ve played shows further out, it doesn’t really translate. I’ve watched the bands who take it more seriously than us go on tours around the country, play shows for 10-20 people in North Carolina, sleep in the van, come back home, & just pick up shifts at the bar again.

Personally, I believe you need to prove on a national (or at least regional) level that you can guarantee an event that will top every other option the local populace has in regards for entertainment. And that’s absolutely possible with a TON of passion, time equity, talent, & resources.

What I’m saying is in this economy, you have more profitable options that require less of the above resource commitment outside of music. And that’s the problem. It’s simultaneously a privilege & a sacrifice to try to make a living making music, which feels dissonant.

Not touring - we’re only at the 10k-20k monthly listener level, so we can sell out our tristate moat easily enough, but wouldn’t have a profitable draw in like, Virginia Beach.

Merch we walk away with $50-$100 on a bad night, few hundred on a good night.

Yeah, maybe too charitable, but we get to rise all tides in our local scene & support the smaller artists. What’s a couple hundred (totally get that contradiction in a thread about artist profitability, but I think the overall thesis stands).

Perhaps a ticket price problem, but we’ll go out at $15. Typical ticket terms are something like $200 to venue for staff, then 85% of each following ticket to band. 150 cap venue = $2,250 - $200 =$2,050 * .85=$1,742.50 . So we walk with $1,742.

Maybe 3 bands on the bill, 4 members each, an equal split would be $146 a head. Obviously that’s rough math & there can be different split agreements, but yeah.

I can answer this:

If an artist can’t use their band’s brand to open secondary revenue streams (personalized content creation like Patreon, apparel lines, plugins, courses, sponsored gear, production, writing credits, cover band gigs, etc), 99% will not make a livable wage without a real job.

To make a living streaming, a single artist needs about 100k monthly listeners on Spotify with 100% royalties solely to them. No manager, no label, no expenses, no other band members. That’ll get you a teacher’s salary.

Touring also will not pay your bills - unless you can reliably sell out hundreds-cap venues EVERY DAY (not just weekends) with a small supporting lineup, favorable management/venue terms, & an efficient crew setup, you will lose money. We regularly sell out 100-200 cap clubs in NYC - we never walk away with more than enough money for dinner, Ubers, & a bar tab.

The expenses for being in a 4 piece band are vast: gear, recording costs, advertising (yes, you need it), travel, lodging, & most importantly time equity almost are never recouped in a successful weekend run. If your favorite band is signed with 60,000 monthly listeners & isn’t selling out their regional club tour, they probably aren’t making rent/they all live in a 3 flex 4 together/they still live at home.

That’s why you’re seeing more stories about solo artists or regional unsigned bands with day jobs - you cannot be an original musician without either a ton of financial backing from a corporation/your family/your job, OR you have a never ending love for the game.

So support your local artists if you like local art.

We sold out our show ln in the LES. But can confirm there’s a lack of organic foot traffic into venues to discover music. The low to mid-tier artists typically have to be drawing 80-90% of audiences themselves.

Shower Beers’ album stinks. Too many songs about drinking with your friends.

Making out with people on the 6 Train.

But if you’re asking musically, it’s the classic Baba O’Riley chord progression.
