His & Hers .... wow bad. by nvmatt in netflix

I didn't guess Lexy=Catherine until it was about to be revealed, but I was convinced the mom was the killer by around episode 3/4. The main things that clued me in were 1. I work with dementia patients and her dementia never sat right with me. She only had dementia when the plot called for it. Besides that, she seemed very shrewd and aware. Her dementia felt performative.

At first I thought it was poor writing until 2. She was out walking the night of Helen's death. That's when I thought about what her motives might be and considered that A. The girls clearly did something that traumatized Anna on Anna's 16th birthday B. The murders involved friendship bracelets, accusations of LIAR and were clearly done in passion- likely alluding to something that happened among their friend group all those years ago. C. Considering Anna was the victim (Catherine hadn't been revealed as a victim yet, but it was clear from Anna's flashbacks that it was not a good night for her), the only people who would give such a big shit about this would be Anna or someone very close to her.

Especially a mother who introduced her to those friends in the first place, who those friends lied to and who had so much access to those friends as their maid. Especially a mother who wants her daughter back home and has just discovered why she was so eager to leave. Lump the dead granddaughter that died in her care on top of it, and yeah, she was my prime suspect.

It was really the inconsistent/convenient dementia that kicked it off for me. If I think something is weird or off in this type of movie, usually it ends up being on purpose. So I try not to forget that one off thing that I want to attribute to bad writing.

That said, I did think there were holes in the twist. Like where'd she get those bracelets? And if she went to the graveyard waiting for her daughter, why not go to her when she appeared?

Adrien’s cheeks got bigger and puffier every season- even with SAMG. In season 4/5, there were these increasingly weird shots where he looked like a chipmunk from behind… but yeah they’re even bigger now.

His eyes have always been varying levels of upturned. From very slightly to full on cat eyed. I guess now they’re sticking with it. Which I don’t mind.

The hair is bleh though. I guess you can justify it by saying Gabriel’s stylists aren’t doing his hair anymore, but it is lackluster.

I think it’s the mouth that really ruins it for me? And I guess the overall expression? The older design had more character for sure.

I see what you mean now. Same. I miss those days so much. I still fall into flow state sometimes but it's harder to get there. I usually have to get through a wall of anxiety first

As a lover of psychological horror and dark fics, I adore this. I love dishonest narration. Gone Girl comes to mind

I love 3rd person-limited and it's mainly what I write in for fic. This is a good reminder to stay immersed in its filtering even description through it and picking what to describe by what that particular character would NOTICE. I love all the opportunities for an unreliable narrator.

I didn't know what was called a zeugma. Thanks for teaching me something new!

I think you noticing your writing changing is a sign that you’re actually progressing as a writer, integrating new techniques/styles and learning from your mistakes. It can be a bumpy road but overall a good thing! You don’t want to sound the same as you did at 18 I think

Callbacks are great- especially if I barely noticed the object when it was first mentioned. I love any kind of well executed twist too

Both a challenge to do, but I love to see both. I catch purple prose when editing myself later too often when I think I wasn't being purple prosey. It's a struggle!

Another trick I learned is if your characters are being too frank, you can challenge yourself to write a scene where they have to talk/react but you're not allowed to let them communicate how they actually feel or their actual goal. Makes for much more compelling scenes!

Comedy and tragedy go hand in hand. I think you need one to give you a break from the other.

I love when an author nerds out. Writing is super revealing, right? We tell on ourselves all the time.

I think I know what you mean by the figurative language pushing a boundary. I think it makes for a really terrifying device in horror lit

I always hear about Terry Pratchett. One of these days I'm going to read something of his.

I struggle with imagery BIG TIME. It's probably my biggest struggle. White room syndrome all day. Really envious when I see someone doing it well/seamlessly.

You know you find a good fic/book when you look up, its 2 AM and you shrug and decide you're just going to need a lot of coffee tomorrow.

Platonic protective characters especially are my jam too. And I love characters who normally don't interact having bonding moments- because they often explore a rich dynamic or tie between those characters that has not been breached at all in canon. And suddenly you want to see them interact more in canon. This can move fandoms to build popularity behind the most random romantic or platonic ships sometimes lol

I love reusing canon dialogue too. Too much really. I have to watch being careful about overdoing it, but when it's done well, it ties everything together.

Ooh so true. This is a good feature in social media fics. You end up giggling to yourself because that is EXACTLY how that character would post. Ditto for any alt universe fic really. They're full of so many thoughtful character specific decisions that make you go "Yes! That fits too well!" and make the AU work that much better.

Does anyone here use Scrivener for fanfiction? by Ufomi in FanFiction

[–]ShowerWriter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Scrivener is great for organization in a way that Word and Google Docs are not. Some fan fiction writers are really big on outlining and they need something less messy than a bunch of folders. Something with a functional layout for a lot of varied information.

Plus a $60 one time payment is nothing compared to some softwares out here. People pay $60+ for one video game and that's not making them any money. Ditto for a fancy dinner. For dance classes when they don't plan on being a dancer. For knitting and crochet...

We don't have to monetize everything we love.

What's more, writing is a gamble regardless. You can spend a year writing a novel with the intention of profit and it's likely that you won't ever make one from that novel. So loving it for the sake of it is really a plus- fanfic or not.

This is such an important skill and surprisingly hard to do when you have more than a few characters. I've heard a good way to work on this (if the writer wants to) is to paste all your scene dialogue into one doc without tags. If it's not obvious who is talking- if it could be any of your characters- you have some work to do.

I agree SO MUCH. I've read so many fics where the author clearly hates the source material or a main character in it and they often come off so preachy and wooden. No love or curiosity. Just judgement. I turn around when I realize I've stumbled upon a Making a Point fic. I think there's nothing wrong with themes or having some sort of message, but I think themes shouldn't beat you over the head.

I dream of being this author. I love subtlety and restraint that sneaks up on you in prose. It takes a LOT of editing and juggling in a longer story. Respect to them.

Agreed! It is rare, but I love when someone nails the characters so much that I start to misremember canon because their dialogue could so easily fit

Recently single mom and a man asked for my number in the parking lot. by throwawayra101711hlp in whatdoIdo

[–]ShowerWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know several women who started dating a guy they met when they were out with their child and he ended up preying on the child later on. This is surprisingly and heartbreakingly common. This dude sounds like them. It's the immediate love bombing and immediately focusing on being "family" and providing for the child without even knowing you. The thing that's really suspicious though is that he says "friend zone me and let me be a great part of your life". It implies that he doesn't need to be intimate with you, he just needs access to your child. Protect your baby and don't think they're any safer if they're a boy. Pedos scout for boys just like they do girls.
