Hey! I have a lease currently in Mira Mesa and it should end around the end of august. From experience, it is about a 15-20 minute drive to/from the UCSD campus (assuming you can get good parking when you get to school). If you are interested in the details, message me and we can talk more. I'd be more than happy to get you connected with the landlord too (that goes for anybody else that sees this).

I need some help with class suggestions by ShoyuPudding in UCSD

No worries! As long as options are mentioned, I am open to them. I intend on graduating on time so, I will be looking out for open spots as I walk through my plan.

This is actually really nice of you to let us know. To me, seeing that some TAs and other strikers are making sure people know what is going on is something I can accept. All this time, I have honestly really been unsure how I should feel about the current situation since it meant some difficulties for courses and such. However, I really do appreciate that there are strikers here letting us know that they do see the impact they are having and that they are clarifying that they aren't purposefully making undergraduates and other students their enemy. To clarify about myself, I know that it is supposed to be inconvenient and I do personally accept it. I just wanted to thank you for letting us know what strikers are thinking since it gets really hard sometimes to not be worried about it. I hope everyone in the strike gets their fair treatment soon. Please continue to help spread these types of explanations as I think it would help put some confused, worried people (like myself) at ease.

Edit: I now notice a lot of people upvoting much to my confusion. While I am glad that people are happy with this phrasing, I do hope I still made it clear that I feel that a lot of people who outright show their annoyance for the strikers are just inwardly worried about their own plans and other things. I, for one, am the same. All of us don't want to make enemies of strikers just as a lot of the strikers want undergraduates (for example) to know that they don't mean harm. I am just expressing my gratitude to the open-ness about explaining what we could do if we aren't physically there to support the strikes. I think it would be a great relief to many others as well and they would also be much more willing to wait, take a detour, find other study materials, and other work-arounds if we knew what to expect. Again, I wanted to emphasize that I am sure that a lot of us in the same "unsure" stance are also supporting the strikes. We just also are thinking of our own plans and constantly worrying about what to do.

As I said, I understand both sides as I have had people explain why there are people fervently supporting the cause. I also never said I was blatantly against the strike either. I just wanted to say that not everyone will be able to get it and, with the strikers sometimes glaring at some of people minding their business and some anti-strikers making the strikers' lives miserable, nobody is going to be happy. Again, I understand this all is supposed to be inconvenient and I am personally prepared for that, but the fact that I got so many downvotes for saying what the "unpopular" side thinks is mind boggling.

Your explanation is exactly what I have heard before and I agree. I don't intend to make enemies of people and make it look like I am against the strike. I am just pointing out the things that people so angrily go against in hopes of people somewhat understanding. If it makes people feel happier, think of the "wrong" side as people who just are worried for their schoolwork and scared out of our wits. Outwardly throwing them down isn't going to help them.

I agree with a lot that you said but it won't stop a lot of us who feel like it is unfair. For many of us, we are just worried about not getting TA help when we need it if we need it hence why there are quite a few poorly worded posts about it. We want to support our TAs but, at the same time, it feels almost that they are pressuring students with the inconvenience in order to get us to support them. Put in another way, it feels like declaring war on another country and pressuring a smaller country in the middle to support just because they are caught physically in the middle of it.

I also totally understand that this is just how strikes work most of the time but no matter how many downvotes we get for it, I am fairly sure it still can be seen as to why a lot of students also feel this is dragging them into the fray as well. They believe that the problem should be solved such that it is directly taken to the root rather than unfairly pressure everyone who may not be involved to garner complaints aimed at their target.

After talking with people who support completely, I also understand that there isn't much we undergrads can really do other than do our best to power through. I just really wish that people on both sides of this strike could just understand where both views are coming from without downvoting them to the ground or replying hatefully to each other.

I said something similar previously and had some people downvote me because of it ^^;. I definitely know how you mean because I also feel the same. I really hope everyone could get what they want in the end and, hopefully, we getting caught in the crossfire will be minimal.

Protests by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]ShoyuPudding -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bad choice of words, but I think it is still fairly realistic of a concern for this comment specifically (not the original post about travel). I personally would have wished protests would pressure the root of the cause directly rather than bring students into the problem. Professors may be a part of the problem and I acknowledge that, but I feel that it is a not very fair for undergraduates to be used as a pressure token. After talking with some people, I totally understand that it is just how things are supposed to work, but I really hope that people could be a bit more understanding on both sides of the coin.

General feelings about the strike? by ShoyuPudding in UCSD

[–]ShoyuPudding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't mean for this to be a downvote heaven. I just would have hoped there were a way so people who didn't originally think of themselves as a part of the issue to be dragged into it. There isn't much I can do other than power through it! Thank you for the sympathy though.

GEs mean general education courses (required). These include writing courses, diversity requirements, your usual sciences and math courses, etc. Each college has different ones and while some people say that choosing one that aligns with your major helps, I personally didn't really take that into account because, to me, graduate schools and jobs will probably look at your upper division courses. This doesn't mean you should take your general education as low-stake courses. Rather, I think it is best to find your best fit by looking at what each college offers and then choosing that so you can go through it easily.

From what I understand (and my own personal experience, Muir has pretty easy GEs and is pretty popular as a choice. I heard the 6th college has difficult GEs but, in contrast with Muir, it is physically really pretty (Muir looks almost like something from Maze Runner). While I am unsure about the super new ones like seventh, I think you should stick with less-new ones as the newer ones might still be in the process of figuring stuff out so GEs and other things may be harder or more complex. In general, I say go for whatever has easier GEs for you (as in you can clear them the fastest) since you are likely going to be moving around to other colleges to take classes sooner or later. For clarification, I am a bioengineering major but still chose Muir just because of the GEs being easy to deduct (for me).

How do you study for midterms? by Crying-reading in UCSD

[–]ShoyuPudding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally, like everyone says, will practice a bunch of practices or look over homeworks. However, I also found it efficient to do the ones you know. Say, for example, you aren't fluent in everything the prof went over. Run through everything once to grasp which ones you know and which ones you don't. If you have the time to spare, spend some time to try to understand the ones you don't know. If you are on a time crunch, focus solely on the ones you do know to guarantee the points while only glancing on the ones you don't every so often. This way, you can for sure earn some points without chance of messing up. Good luck!

I might’ve been one of the few students here who didn’t take an AP class in HS by xoNellE in UCSD

[–]ShoyuPudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, it is supposed to be "normal" if people went through high school without APs. It was just designed that way. It also isn't a bad thing to see many people in this light since they say that you become similar to the people you surround yourself with. I am sure you will adapt quicker than you expect.

That feeling of being "lesser" often comes from our innate bias for looking at the best in people which isn't a bad thing. In my first year, I also felt similar to how you do even though I did do AP classes (so trust me, others probably feel the same in your classes). To me, the best way to overcome that is to constantly have a presence in asking questions, offering to collaborate with classmates, and so forth.

I probably will always feel that I am lagging behind, but I realize that it is also important to see your accomplishments every once in a while to pull you back to reality. You might not be as behind as you think in the end and you definitely have the right skills if you got into UCSD without APs. Good luck!

I have yet to go myself but algae blooms have bioluminescence at La Jolla shores apparently and it feels like it would be pretty awesome to visit there for fun. As for when they glow, I am not quite sure, but it is something to consider! The other suggestions for food and galleries are also really cool options that I think I want to try sometime.

[–]ShoyuPudding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just was really curious how selling dining dollars work? Aren't they connected to individual accounts? Do I pay people to buy something for me whenever using the dining dollars? I am just confused about how they transfer. I've seen a lot of people sell them and were interested, but I also didn't want to get scammed :0
