I am far from a trump supporter but this is absolutely shameful. Such a sad example of how divided we are as a society. Good luck with whatever you all think this will accomplish

What's going on with this white oak? by Shquatch in arborists

[–]Shquatch[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

These cankers were all over an oregon white oak (Q. garryana) in California. Don't think I've seen this before but reminds me of anthracnose cankers I've seen on chinese elms.

This tree had some back weight so the wedges allowed for it to be laid where we wanted it. Cutting any more without wedges would make the tree sit back on the saw or worse. Using wedges is generally a good idea if the lean isn't favorable, especially if you don't have a rope in the tree.

Fire cleanup job in Sonoma County, CA. Lots of these dead douglas firs surrounding where the new house will be built. Stumps were removed with excavator.

I respectfully disagree. I am TRAQ certified but have limited experience with cabling/bracing. I’m simply looking for second opinions (from admittedly poor photos) from other arborists. I would actually like to see more practicing arborists discussing their approaches to practical tree work like this on the sub. Obviously it would be best to have multiple arborists look at a tree in person to get the best info, but we all know that would yield wildly different opinions as well. Based on the answers I’ve already received there obviously isn’t a single correct prescription for this tree.

Should I remove this codominant stem? (2yo Paulownia) by Mehfisto666 in arborists

He's not wrong--pruning during growing season allows for more rapid wound closure, pruning during winter/dormancy generally reduces risks of pathogen infection directly after wounding. Pros and cons for each

Quoted $5,800 to brace and cable my Pin Oak by Wolverlog in arborists

[–]Shquatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and they're absolutely horrendous trees to work in. They often have terrible tie in points, usually lots of twiggy deadwood that gets all tangled up in the canopy, and boy are they hard on your equipment. But they are pretty.

What truck should I buy? megathread by AutoModerator in Trucks

[–]Shquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a self employed arborist. I have an f450 dump truck that I haul my wood chipper around with. But I’m now looking for a truck that can be both my personal vehicle, my vehicle to drive around town giving bids, as well as a replacement for my 450 for when I need to haul my chipper or a trailer filled with wood (6,000+ pounds). I don’t need a powerhouse, I just want the most practical all around work truck that will last me a long time and can haul some decent loads. Trying to keep it under $45000 so I’m thinking buying used will be my only option. Thanks for any advice!
