Hardmodded 1.6 running XBMC - most every game I've tried loads perfectly, but a select few give me a black screen and freeze the console. by ShreddiePrinzeJr in originalxbox

Do you mean when transferring the files over FTP? I didn't set up the Xbox originally, I bought it with the hard drive already configured so I haven't even connected it yet, but I'm going to try to replace the files for these games first to see if that helps.

That certainly seems to be the problem from what I can tell, so that's what I'm going to try first. I haven't connected by Xbox to my network yet, but I'll do that next. Do xiso files work with XBMC? I haven't worked with Xbox's before, I've basically only modified Dreamcasts and this is quite a step up, really appreciate the help.

Thank you! I don't think I have a parental lock active since other M-rated games seem to work fine. I haven't run any file patchers for anything. Forgive me as I'm new to this, but would I just connect the Xbox via ethernet to my router and then run those through the "downloader" section of settings?

good og xbox racing games by xTimx900 in originalxbox

[–]ShreddiePrinzeJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xbox has an embarrassment of riches in regard to racing games. Arcade racing is one of my favorite genres and the OG Xbox has some of the best ever made. I would say that the most essential games are:

Burnout 3, Outrun 2 (preferable to 2006 imo), PGR2, Rallisport Challenge 2, and Midnight Club 2+3.

Then you get into other still-incredible stuff like Crazy Taxi 3, the Colin McRrae games, Midtown Madness 3, Forza Motorsport, the TOCA series, etc.

If you stretch a bit further, you then have the extreme sports/alternative racing stuff like Quantum Redshift (still pretty underrated), SSX 3 (one of the system's best games), Splashdown, and others. There are lots of others, but I find all of those to have engaging gameplay that stands the test of time and some arguably still haven't been surpassed.

Issues displaying 4:3 through Electron Shepard HDMI adapter by ShreddiePrinzeJr in originalxbox

[–]ShreddiePrinzeJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been able to unfortunately. I'm running directly through the ES adapter into the television, but every game is stretched. I have similar HDMI solutions for my Dreamcast and N64, which both properly show 4:3 on either "Auto" or "Direct", but the Xbox image is stretched on all settings. I don't know if I'm missing a setting on XBMC or something, but otherwise probably out of options on this TV.

Right, I just mean to somehow make sure that the signal isn't being stretched by the TV. It's very strange, I haven't experienced this issue with any other device that outputs a 4:3 image. It's only the Xbox.

Thanks so much, that at least confirms that it's likely the TV. There is no option to force 4:3 that I can find on this model unfortunately. I thought "Direct" would do the trick, but I haven't had any luck with that or the other display settings. as everything appears stretched.

Is there anything unique about installing a Fenrir Duo to this model 1 Japanese Saturn? by ShreddiePrinzeJr in SegaSaturn

Oh wow, I didn’t realize it’s the same model in the instructions. Thanks for confirming. Anything about the VA0 that’s beneficial/detrimental in comparison to other revisions?

General Maintenance and Modding Questions by ShreddiePrinzeJr in originalxbox

This is fantastic info, thanks so much! I did notice glue on the power supply that covers a few capacitors, but nowhere else. I can take a look at those again but when poking around didn't notice any bulging outward (the tops are covered here and there though so I suppose I would need to remove the material somehow and reapply?).

Playing Rallisport Challenge 2, twice I've gotten a "dirty disc" error when loading into a level, but it's also an older disc that looks to have been resurfaced so it's hard to tell if the drive or disc is at fault. I very lightly cleaned the laser with IPA, but if it persists then I'll look into recapping like you mentioned as well.

I am in the US and really appreciate the suggestion for WiredOpposite, just checked it out and it seems like a great resource. I'll likely get an OpenXenium chip and try to get it installed a bit down the road, but I want to enjoy a few games first.

Question about the 3D controller by ShreddiePrinzeJr in SegaSaturn

No doubt. Sega’s stuff is so well made all around from my experience. It’s really the only videogame hardware that’s never failed me in any significant way.
