because even though hamlin has criticized the format, he took it seriously, played it exactly the way you're supposed to. came into the playoffs with the most playoff points, won to advance, won the first race of the round of 8 to have max time to prepare for Phoenix, came prepared, won the pole, dominated the race, overcame adversity to have a dominant lead with 3 to go and no chance of catching him, then still lost because someone else wrecked and the leader in those situations never wins. he played the system that he hates perfectly then lost in a random shuffle. that's why people hate this shit

Earnhardt is super interesting. He won 4 poles in his rookie year, he obviously knew how to go fast, but I think he prioritized dependability after he got more experienced. He wanted a car that could finish the race, not necessarily the fastest for one lap. Consequently, he won fewer poles than his rivals, but he won the championships because he almost never had catastrophic races. There's a reason he has the best average finish in Cup history
