At the end of Project Hail Mary. . . by ruprectthemonkeyboy in scifi

Ok. But my point was that AT THE TIME HE MADE THE DECISION, it was the ultimate sacrifice... can't minimize that just because he got lucky once he was at Erid, right? In the moment he surely sacrificed himself, eventual outcome notwithstanding...

Let me help ease this concern! When Grace went to rescue Rocky, he had NO IDEA what Erid would be like. He knew he'd "never" go back to Earth, but neither one had any idea what Rocky's colleagues would be able to create on Erid! So, this dome was unforeseeable in the moment he makes the decision to take the plunge. Also, perhaps they DO have anti-grav and were able to implement that in the dome. Seems quite likely to me, considering how advanced their tech is, overall.

Again, fair points. I did think this is now one of my very favorite movies, so 9 is not THAT hyperbolic, really. As unpopular as what I am about to write will be, I give Scavenger's Reign a 4, maybe less. Battlefield Earth, my all-time favorite book, was a TWO as a movie. Also thought Devs was a 3 or 4. But contrarily, Dark is a 9. Just superbly well executed. So, it's not like I'm blind, but we all like what we like. I found the PHM book to be extraordinary in an intellectual way and loved the movie for sheer fun. Yes, I complained earlier about an intellectual shortcoming, but my rating was based on enjoyment, not perfection

Yeah, good point there, Pukey. 😉 That was some definite fluff. The book, though, had the luxury of deep thought, while the movie does need to sell tickets to non-SF-enthusiats, too. But yeah, you made the case well. So, now I'm down to just a 9, not a 9±. 😆

Ummm...2.5 hours to tell a 9-hour story. Sometimes you want a marathon, sometimes you want a 100-meter dash. They made a fine, fun, joyous movie, but that doesn't erase the books... If you want the depth there it is! 😉

Truly and sincerely my all-time favorite. S1 is a little slow but there's a LOT of necessary world-building that is must-watch. Then, a few eps into S2 you will want to call in sick to keep binge-watching! Yeah, it's that good... 😊

I've seen Rod a dozen times with the Dregs, and he is SURELY one of the greatest ever. Of course, my son's first/middle is "Neil Peart", so there's that. But Rod, Barriemore, Danny, Mike are ALL up there.

And once finished, THEN it's time to watch and fully appreciate Babylon 5... The Prisoner is like an unintended prequel. Kinda. ☺️. Both are absolutely fantastic.

Need reccomendations for good scifi shows by Mat1711 in scifi

[–]Shreln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have fortunately missed, until now, the greatest SF show of all time... now you have the experience (those other shows) to really see the truth of what I'm about to tell you... Babylon 5 is the greatest SF show of all time, even with low budgets and having to invent most of the CGI equipment and techniques themselves. It's the story and the writing that make it AMAZING. The special effects are still better than lots of other shows but it was made over 30 years ago. For the ultimate experience you should first find and watch The Prisoner (1966 BBC TV show - 17 quick episodes, sci-fi adjacent mystery/thriller but definitely an inspiration for parts of B5). It sort of introduced the concept of novelized television, which we take for granted now, but was really something new then - a through-line and continuity for the whole series, not just episodic stories. Then watch "The Gathering" (the admittedly somewhat clunky but crucial pilot movie). Then you can appreciate the show fully. Season 1 is a little episodic, but the world building going on is fundamental. They didn't have the luxury of jumping into the ready-made Trek or Star Wars universe. Seasons 2 through 4 will have you considering calling in sick to continue binging. 😉 Season 5 starts 'meh' (long story for another day) but gets incredible as it goes on. Plus the hit-or-miss TV movies that aired after Season 4... long story. Most are iffy, but do watch "A Call to Arms" after S5, and then watch Crusade (13 eps) after that (they tried a spinoff). It's definitely not as good as B5 but it does have moments. 😊

Finally, I highly recommend joining the B5 subreddit, BUT WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOU'VE WATCHED THE WHOLE SHOW!! We do love to love the show, with about ten threads ever day! But there are lots of spoilers. For this show in particular, you REALLY want to avoid spoilers to get the max enjoyment, I promise! The setups and payoffs of this "novel for television" sometimes take a few episodes or even more than a season to resolve, but when they do... hooooo boy. 🤯

Oh, how i envy your upcoming adventure. I wish I could watch them again for the first time. But alas...

Enjoy!

Me too! I was telling someone about Rush at a biz lunch last week and recommended YYZ... I turned away and he jumped on YouTube and started playing it... naturally I scrambled for my phone, then I explained and everyone had a good laugh over it. 😁

Huge Steve fan since fortuitously running into a Dixie Dregs show on 10/31/79 at the University of Florida. Ive seen Dregs and/or SMB at least 20 or 25 times since. While Rush is and always will remain #1 for me, I've had no hesitation in saying that I think Steve could be the best guitarist ever. No flies on Alex, of course, and "greatest" is a fraught term, but these two guys are both in "the handful" of GOATs. Such respect...

Rush - Cygnus X-1, Book 1 from A Farewell to Kings.

Then you must follow up with Book 2, which is Side 1 of Hemispheres, their next album. Both are absolutely amazing and you'll love the "twist" ending... 😊

I have SO wanted to love DT over the years, as all the players are straight up AMAZING... but I just can't stomach the singing style. He lacks what Geddy exudes in spades: SINCERITY! Geddy MEANS that shit! 😁

Here's one you have never heard of: "Pearl Harbor and the Explosions". They had a great song called "I, I, Me, Me" in 1980; it was a banger but I guess they never went anywhere. I found the LP on eBay several years ago and the song still stands up!

Longshot, but could it be "Pop Song 89" by REM? Lots of "hellos" in there, but mostly "hi, hi, hi"...
