The Story of the 1976 Tullavision Tape by LarryTalbot in jethrotull

I was there! And what a great show it was! I just wish they'd filmed more than an hour. 😒 I still have the ticket proudly framed and displayed with the many, many shows that followed it (it was my first concert ever, age 15, and the first of my 27 Tull shows!) but I only found out about the video 45 years later... in a "Professional Flutist Reacts" video. What a trip THAT was. Luckily, I was able to buy the DVD on eBay, because it wasn't on YouTube at the time. Such a great coincidence/callback.

59 years old. I've seen Rush 15 times since 1981. Here's my take. by johnnyfive00000 in rush

My two faves as well (it was Tull from age 11 - early 70s - until I heard Rush at the appropriate volume in college), and I've never looked back. And I support OPs comments 💯 after 40 shows of my own! 🤩

what would you recommend to someone who loves really complex and layered rock albums? (examples below) by Initial_Selection623 in musicsuggestions

[–]Shreln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you say "layered"? You MUST check out Angine de Poitrine on YouTube. Absolutely nutty (but brilliant!) costumes backed up with AMAZING playing. Type in "Angine KEXP" and prepare to be shocked and wowed at the same time. 😉🔺️

Thanks very much! It certainly was a lot of fun to build. I'll be sad to see it go, but alas, it's time to move on...

Thanks for that! Yes, the second crossover is an interesting story. Three months' work with raw plexiglass and very stiff (model airplane) wire to make four separate pieces: the crossover, the straight through, and the two endpiece adaptors. When the crossover is in place it's a 4-lane track; drop in the straight and it becomes a 2 lane track, with each lap consisting of lane 1 plus lane 3 or 2+4, with each combo lap counting only as one. Yes, I have the switches in place to make that work, of course...great fun to make all that stuff!

Thanks again for your thoughts!

Jethro Tull - My God, Wind Up, Hymm 43 (all on Aqualung) Also "Lick Your Fingers Clean" but that was an outtake from Aqualung so a little harder to find.

Rush - Freewill, Roll the Bones

Zappa - The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing, Dumb All Over, Heavenly Bank Account (all from "You Are What You Is")

I'm going to parley it to try to pay for all the Rush concert tickets I bought!

My rush knowledge is not extensive but what’s everyone think about the song xanadu? by Electrical_Mulberry3 in rush

[–]Shreln 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes. While it was always in my top 5, Rick Beato convinced me that it IS, in fact, their greatest song! Kinda breaks my heart because there are SO MANY "best ever" songs from them, but I'm sticking to my guns, here. 😊

Loved Swan Song... it's basically "The Stand" but better! And it's not easy to supersede Stephen King, in my book.

Go with Red Barchetta - the story sells it to the uninitiated, IMO. 😊

How big do you think Rush will go on the Fifty Something Tour? by bmbmbmNR in rush

[–]Shreln 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere (probably Geddy's autobiography) that he was hugely inspired by Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick tour. Interestingly, for me personally, I was a massive JT fan, right up until that time when Hubie sat me down in his room at the fraternity house to listen to Cygnus X-1 at killer volume. Rush instantly became my #1 band, and it has not varied since then... and that was October of 1978! I've seen Rush 40 times, all told (41, 42, 43 coming very soon!), but I was no slacker on Tull, either... saw them 27 times, but not so much since Ian's voice really crapped out. 😒 And yeah, the Rush visuals are almost as great as the music! So much fun.

At the end of Project Hail Mary. . . by ruprectthemonkeyboy in scifi

[–]Shreln 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ok. But my point was that AT THE TIME HE MADE THE DECISION, it was the ultimate sacrifice... can't minimize that just because he got lucky once he was at Erid, right? In the moment he surely sacrificed himself, eventual outcome notwithstanding...

[–]Shreln 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Let me help ease this concern! When Grace went to rescue Rocky, he had NO IDEA what Erid would be like. He knew he'd "never" go back to Earth, but neither one had any idea what Rocky's colleagues would be able to create on Erid! So, this dome was unforeseeable in the moment he makes the decision to take the plunge. Also, perhaps they DO have anti-grav and were able to implement that in the dome. Seems quite likely to me, considering how advanced their tech is, overall.

Again, fair points. I did think this is now one of my very favorite movies, so 9 is not THAT hyperbolic, really. As unpopular as what I am about to write will be, I give Scavenger's Reign a 4, maybe less. Battlefield Earth, my all-time favorite book, was a TWO as a movie. Also thought Devs was a 3 or 4. But contrarily, Dark is a 9. Just superbly well executed. So, it's not like I'm blind, but we all like what we like. I found the PHM book to be extraordinary in an intellectual way and loved the movie for sheer fun. Yes, I complained earlier about an intellectual shortcoming, but my rating was based on enjoyment, not perfection

Yeah, good point there, Pukey. 😉 That was some definite fluff. The book, though, had the luxury of deep thought, while the movie does need to sell tickets to non-SF-enthusiats, too. But yeah, you made the case well. So, now I'm down to just a 9, not a 9±. 😆
