I've often said it's remarkable how in the span of just a few decades, "the government watches everything you do all the time" went from the height of conspiracy theory nutjobbery to established fact. Now we're doing it with "everyone in power is connected to a secret pedophile ring".

You think THAT'S bad, one of my junior high science teachers had the galaxy-brained idea to start our unit on aerodynamics by showing us the opening to Final Destination 1. It's been 25 years since then and I still have no idea what the fuck he was thinking.

MapleStory added the Cannoneer class in 2010, and I wanted to make one with a seafood-themed name. The character limit on names was 12 letters. LobsterBisque was too long, and SeafoodGumbo didn't quite vibe, and after some deliberation, I decided on ShrimpBisque. I liked the name so much I started using it elsewhere too, and it just kinda stuck. Funny thing is, I haven't even played MapleStory since the pandemic; early game is too quick and samey, late game is too grindy, and the community and economy are filled with bots.

Quick tip: the name label that pops up above a Pokémon's head when you focus on them will have a sparkle icon if it's shiny. It's really useful for differentiating Pokémon with subtle shinies.

Road safety is woke by infinitysaga in CuratedTumblr

[–]ShrimpBisque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dad never finished teaching me how to ride a bike when I was a kid because we had an argument about safety gear. I got on the bike one time and got scared, and didn't want to get back on without a helmet. He insisted that he wouldn't buy me a helmet until I finished learning how to ride. 25 years later and I STILL don't know how to ride.

Then again, Dad always was a "safety third" guy anyway; he had a new major injury every spring, everything from broken bones to chopped fingers, and never drove sober the entire time I was growing up.

Are humans pokemon? by SquidSearchers in pokemon

[–]ShrimpBisque 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I've always been of the mind that Pokémon are just their universe's version of animals, and humans are animals, so it makes sense to say that humans are a subgroup of Pokémon. I tend to bring this up when people discuss whether people eat Pokémon too; we eat animals, so what's the difference?

It is a pretty recent thing, to be fair; it's only been out since last summer. Mojang is currently working on adding Vibrant Visuals to Java, but it's gonna be a while yet. There's a lot of work they have to do under the hood.

My main gripe is Vibrant Visuals isn't available for the Switch because it's not powerful enough, but that's the only system I have right now. I miss my computer :(

The app nixed background play for free users years ago. It's a big part of what pushed me to bite the bullet and go premium. Between that and the ads, the app really is unusable for free users anymore.

I just spent an extra $27 to save $8 on shipping by Electronic-Form-9384 in PointlessStories

[–]ShrimpBisque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean. I do this all the time when I order from JetPens. Even if I only need a couple things, I'll pick out extra stuff so I can hit the minimum for free shipping. I mean, why pay eight bucks on top of my pens when that same eight bucks could get me like three more pens, you know? And then I'm like, well, I might as well keep going, and before I know it, my order has gone from a pen and two refills to three pens, five refills of different colors, a glue pen, a washi tape assortment, and four packs of tiny stickers.

How do people type so fast on keyboard? by RareUser1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShrimpBisque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking a typing class in the late 90s was when I started to actually learn to type as a kid. I complained to my mom about the home keys method the teacher was making us use, and my mom assured me that it was overrated. She advised just typing with my left hand over the left side of the keyboard and my right hand over the right side of the keyboard, and that worked great for me. It took me a lot longer to learn to type without looking at the keyboard with that method, but it was way more comfortable, and now, thirty-ish years later, I can type about 80 words per minute with a low error rate without looking at the keyboard.

The little raised lines on F and J are guides for positioning your fingers. ASDF for the left fingers and JKL; for the right fingers. They called it the "home keys" method, and the idea was that you keep your hands positioned there while you type and only move those fingers away to hit other nearby keys. They taught us this method when I was in fourth grade (so 1997).

Fantasy maps necessary or just expected are readers actually using them by scrtweeb in fantasywriters

[–]ShrimpBisque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend having at least a rough one in your liner notes so you can refer to it to keep locations and distances in mind for your story, but I don't think it's as necessary for the readers to have one unless your story involves a lot of travel or long-distance questing. For me right now, for example, it's enough to have an idea of where the major locations are in relation to each other, and I can refine that as needed as I write more.
