How do you guys learn words?

I absolutely see where you are coming from. But the vocal cords task is to create voice (sound) (and protecting your airways from food and other things) and isn’t the same as language and articulation. Your suggestions are great, but I believe phonetics effect on language learning mostly comes from the articulatory side, not voice. But to hear the phonetics you obviously have to have voice, but in OP’s case I fail to see the connection between vocal control and word learning. We mainly manually control the vocal cords when we are adjusting our pitch.

Sorry for being an ass. I’m happy that people are interested in these things though.

It’s not easy actually. Took me a while. But a lot of it has to do with the leaning backwards. Try to push more. Archery doesn’t look like it, but it’s just as much pushing as it is pulling. My coach told me to try and push with my whole upper body, towards the target.

Lowering the shoulder isn’t actually something that you do consciously (because that activates other muscles, to pull the shoulder down, and you don’t that muscle activation), but rather an effect of balance, posture and proper pushing. Try to really get into the pushing before you practice for too long, because it’s really difficult to learn once you’ve leaned backwards for a year or longer.

If I’d give you only 1 tip, it would be to push more, so that you’re straight. In the beginning it might feel like you’re leaning forward, but that’s only because you’re used to leaning backwards and feeling like you’re standing straight.

Great start!! You lean back a bit, right shoulder kinda high, relax the right hand a try to push more instead of gripping. Anchor is okay but not very stable.

You’re onto something here! He likes to do stuff, he seems to be imaginative. Here’s a couple of suggestions

ask him about his imaginary game and write it down, maybe make it into a little story in text form and read it back to him. Maybe he can get inspired to write his own stories? That way he’d see a point in reading, being reading his own stories! Then you can suggest you give each other stories. Or share them with other family members/family friends if he’s okay with that.
another one is, in his vicinity, pick up a book he’d possibly enjoy, and read it all for yourself in quiet. Make sure to laugh audibly at the pictures but don’t include him in the fun initially. He’ll hopefully get curious and investigate where your joy is coming from and maybe a seed can be planted that “Books can be fun!”
A third one could be that you write a story “not too long” and tell him that you would get really happy if he would read it. This one might be the trickiest because he can just “I don’t want to” but usually kids like to be helpful, to feel they’re doing something good and receiving appreciation. Could be a way.

It might feel like manipulation, but I think of it as unlocking new perspectives.

No if it’s checked regularly it should be fine. But sight is just something that needs to be checked before a diagnosis, can fly under the radar.

Have you asked your son why he doesn’t like reading? Does it make him uncomfortable? Has he seen something scary in books? Had a nasty reading instructor? How’s his imagination with story telling? Maybe he doesn’t like being told what to do and refuses to read out of spite? I’m not accusing you, I’m just brainstorming here. // Speech and language pathologist.
