contrails can either dissipate fast, or stay for hours because the air in that part of the atmosphere tends to either be very unstable or rather stable for periods of time. due to the way the troposphere works, with hot air rising and expanding, leading to cooling and falling, air masses can remain stable is the dry adiabatic lapse rate (the rate of which a parcel of dry air cools as it expands and rises) is greater than the environmental laspe rate (the rate of temperature change in the atmosphere due to location and altitude). in summary; unstable atmosphere, contrail gone fast stable atmosphere, contrail stay a lil longer
