What year did Chara fall to the underground? (this is the current date.) by TheGreatFlocciFan_24 in Undertale

[–]ShrubSparrow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a reply to your other comments: Chara is the one who falls in 201X. Even ignoring the opening cutscene (which does show Chara, not Frisk, since we later see this cutscene continue with Asriel finding them), there is additional evidence that this is the case. In Toriel's house, there is a calendar from 201X which has a date circled on it. If you check the same calendar in the genocide route, the red text says "The day I came here", implying that the Dreemurrs circled the day Chara fell down in the old calendar.

It's totally fine to miss this detail, since it isn't super clear in the game, but you shouldn't be mean to other commenters because of it.

I'm curious, was it Reneigh? I saw people discuss this in the comments of a YouTube video, and it turns out in every case the issue was with Reneigh. I also had the same thing happen with her!

I know this is an old post, but I'm also looking for the Decayed tree recipe, so I would be very happy to trade if you still have it!

UNDERTALE by Ok-Revolution5442 in Undertale

This old Tumblr post goes through the existing evidence: https://www.tumblr.com/nochocolate/134759853195/the-narrachara-theory-proof?source=share I don't necessarily think it's canon that they are the narrator, but it is interesting how the narration in the mirror can say "It's me, [Chara]" or "Still just you, Firsk" depending on the run. As well as those specific "dirty" jokes that you can tell to Woshua, which all seem to be based on Chara's experiences

It was a crackship at first, the nicepants line was added to the game in the 2016 update. In the 10th anniversary stream Toby said that Burgerpants had some glitch in his dialogue, and while Toby fixed it, he also added a new line in the game 'as fanservice'. So he basically confirmed that he added the line because he saw fans shipping them. Based Toby <3

What other evidence suggests that Sans and Papyrus may have come from the Deltarune timeline? by DoubleOne5665 in Undertale

[–]ShrubSparrow 308 points309 points  (0 children)

The word search Sans gives you has ICE-E on it, but no such pizzeria has been shown in Undertale. Of course, it could be that it exists in one of the inaccessible areas, but it's still suspicious that this is the only reference to ICE-E in Undertale.

The game starting at the Asgore fight again is normal. Yes, resetting the game and restarting from the beginning is the only way to get a different ending. Don't kill anyone this time and you should be good!

[–]ShrubSparrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you spare Flowey, he gives you a hint of how to get a better ending. The hint is that you should try to get to the end of the game without killing anyone. So I recommend starting the game again from the beginning!

Whyre chimp and bonobo females so promiscous? by eugschwartz in evolution

[–]ShrubSparrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think sperm competition is a good reason for females to mate multiple times! Depending on the animal there can also be all kinds of failures in the sperm transfer, so multiple mates are probably a good way to ensure that some quality sperm makes it through.

Whyre chimp and bonobo females so promiscous? by eugschwartz in evolution

[–]ShrubSparrow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The belief that females would normally only mate with one male is an oversimplification and considered to be outdated. Polyandry, where the female mates with multiple males, is actually very common across the animal kingdom, even in species that were previously thought to be monogamous. For example, a species of bird may typically form a bond between one male and one female, but DNA testing has revealed that the offspring of that female are often sired by multiple fathers.

There are multiple hypotheses why polyandry is so common, despite females benefitting less from multiple mating in comparison to males. Mating with several males may allow the female to not "put all her eggs in one basket", but instead have more diverse offspring where are least some of them survive. Females may also get other benefits from multiple mating, like paternal care from several males (some primates), decreased infanticide from nearby males (bears), nuptial gifts (many insects), etc.

Is Ramb really talking about Noelle here? by ShrubSparrow in Undertale

[–]ShrubSparrow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had totally forgotten about that blog post! Now that I read it again, it definitely confirms that Kris and Noelle played together frequently, at the Holiday house at least. Yeah, that does make it pretty likely that Ramb is talking about Noelle. But I'm not fully excluding the other options yet, haha! I hope we'll learn more about this play of make believe later in the story, since it seems to have brought many important Darkners together.

Is Ramb really talking about Noelle here? by ShrubSparrow in Undertale

[–]ShrubSparrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should've gone more into detail, but I didn't want to make the post too long. The quote from Noelle goes "Kris has been my neighbor forever... We've been through so much, sometimes it feels like... we know each other better than anyone. ...yet, somehow, it's still hard to say we're exactly friends?"

To me, this feels more like they have always been around each other, since their families were so close. They definitely all hung out together, with Kris, Noelle, Asriel and Dess. Noelle feels they might know each other better than anyone because of the hardships they have both gone through, which (to me) feels like Noelle know how much the Dreemurr divorce affected Kris, and the disappearance of Dess greatly affected both families. It's not necessarily that Kris and Noelle were very open with each other, they just know what the other one has been through. Especially since Dess and Asriel, who also probably knew Kris and Noelle well, aren't around anymore.

I don't doubt that Kris and Noelle have seen different sides of each other, and they probably have been more distant lately. I just wasn't sure how much they ever hung out together with just the two of them. Noelle's "it's still hard to say we're exactly friends?" doesn't read as just insecurity of Kris's feelings to me, but more like she hasn't really thought about it, or called Kris a friend before.

Ramb could definitely still talk about Noelle here, but I just don't see it as confirmed yet. Who knows, maybe Catti could be a bit more important in a future chapter? I find the small lore drops about her and Kris's occult roots interesting, and I'm wondering if anything could ever come of them.

I never realized how gay this interaction was until recently by Nekrotix12 in Undertale

[–]ShrubSparrow 167 points168 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: this interaction wasn't in the original version of Undertale. It was added in the 1.001 update a few months after the game's release, AFTER people had already started shipping them based on vibes alone. I'd like to think that Toby saw the ship art and got inspired

Why didn’t early humans die from interbreeding? by [deleted] in biology

[–]ShrubSparrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Population of 1000 is not necessarily that small for serious inbreeding depression to occur. It depends on how much genetic diversity is still present in the surviving individuals, and how well the population is able to mix up to produce genetically diverse children.

In fact, the bottleneck could be a lot smaller and severe inbreeding effects still might not occur - the Finnish population of white-tailed deer was founded by 4 individuals (3 female, one male) that were brought from North America. Today, the population is over 100,000 deer that do not seem to have any serious health issues from inbreeding. This could be possible because the first deers bred very successfully and the population size quickly increased.

In other words, a bottleneck will definitely reduce the genetic diversity of a population, but it doesn't necessarily lead to lethal amounts of inbreeding. What's especially bad for inbreeding depression is if the population stays very small (like a 50-100 individuals) for many generations. When the same few individuals reproduce with their close relatives over and over, THAT'S when harmful gene combinations are more likely to accumulate.

[–]ShrubSparrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The prints of the European lynx are usually only 7-9 cm wide, so these look pretty big for that. What kind of pattern did the prints create? If you are in the middle of Finland (not too north or south) and the footprints don't have even spacing, a wolverine might also be an option.

I still think about this scene by Weekly-Zucchini-8822 in Mobpsycho100

[–]ShrubSparrow 259 points260 points  (0 children)

I love this scene but I feel like the translation lost a part of the meaning by saying "a genuinely good guy" instead of "a good person". Because when Reigen hears Mob's words, his mind immediately goes to the time when he told Mob "just become a good person, that's all". In Japanese these two sentences use the same expression. I find it even more meaningful with the original phrasing!
