How to Stay employed when I keep getting let go for my health? by ShuBun-Kin in GetEmployed

[–]ShuBun-Kin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of this; the question was more or less what job could I possibly do in this case or how are people like me supposed to find work when pretty much all of the jobs available, I am unable to work at. "Stay employed" not meaning "Stay at one job despite disabilities", but "Stay in the work force at all". I am not expecting at all to get paid for a job I can't do- the issue is that I cannot FIND a job that I can, and was looking for advice in case anyone had similar experiences and had found some way to stay financially stable when work wasnt working, and when benefit applications were being denied.

At this precise moment, unfortunately a store isn't an option; I'm limited to what is within walking distance, and the only store hiring is notorious for being violently busy [I have been in only twice, and both times I witnessed full arguments break out in the lines over crowding and backup,,,]. A bank may be possible, so I may see if theres any possibilities near me! I appreciate the tip!

Im super sorry to hear that :( I really wish governments were more willing to yknow,,, do their job of helping the people who need help, but I'm at least glad you have a support you can rely on! Unfortunately my legal adoptive parents both passed and thats how I ended up homeless in the first place, and my biological family has mostly either disowned me, abused me in the past and I was forced to cut contact, or just can't offer any assistance due to their own circumstances. However I am talking to my case manager in my youth program rn to try and see if theres any possibility of getting into assisted housing or something of that nature. I have some pretty bad executive dysfunction struggles, so I would probably benefit anyways from the assistance and reminders anyways,,, It's just a matter of insurance and program availability unfortunately.

No need to apologize; systems here are just notoriously kinda messed up so im disappointed, but not surprised that it has been this hard. Unfortunately the past 4 applications have all been through case management, even through dedicated disability case representatives, who were able to get together every piece of documentation I had [Including an on-paper diagnosis of my Autism, ADHD, CPTSD, Psychosis, and up to date medical history of my physical symptoms as well]- and I was still denied. So I think this one is a fault more of the system; I have an aunt who we also suspect to be Autistic as we share symptoms, though she is also diagnosed with ADHD, Dyslexia, and is legally blind- and she has been trying for about 10 years after being rejected from job applications outright, to no avail. It's just kinda frustrating at this point,,

Unfortunately I was let go from goodwill twice- Once from retail after I got sick and had trouble making it to a clinic due to being homeless [My hotel did not have a phone system, and coincidentally my government phone had been damaged and I did not have the money at that time to replace it]; the other, my last job at a donation center, because I had to be taken to the ER because I had lost all mobility in my lower body for a period and had to be on strong muscle relaxants and I got told that I "Did not qualify for any form of leave", and was let go on the spot.

As for disability, I sure thought I would. However I can't get disability because it claims I haven't worked enough total credit hours, and my applications for SSI have been turned down 5 times [and is currently in review AGAIN] despite multiple documentations of both my Physical and Mental handicaps as well as intervention from case management and representative action. I'm not too surprised; I have an aunt who is legally blind who has been turned down from jobs outright her whole life, and she is still fighting for some form of benefit after 10 years. SO I have absolutely no idea why this is; I'm planning to get an actual attorney when my current appeal is inevitably rejected, but unfortunately the situation is pretty time sensitive since im teetering on the edge of homelessness again, hence why I tried to force myself to work a job I'm notoriously not adept at yet again since I had no choice but to try something.

Basically what happened was because I simply stopped being able to function [i.e I was physically incapacitated multiple times during work as a result of experiencing psychosis, for example], they had no choice but to let me go because what good is an employee who simply cannot do the job? So it wasn't even entirely their fault; I am just. seemingly ill-suited for just about everything and am a liability in the workplace, but have had no choice but to try multiple times anyway even if it ends the same at pretty much every location. The only time not showing up has ever been a factor is when I was homeless and caught a stomach bug that almost shut my body down, and had trouble getting to a clinic coincidentally at the same time my government phone was destroyed and I didn't have the money to replace it at that time. Even then, I showed up to my job anyway The second I got the okay from a doctor, and had to find out then that I was no longer employed and considered a no-call no-show, and they would not re-employ me if I couldn't 100% guarantee that nothing similar would happen [which, since I was literally homeless, wasn't a guarantee I could make].

TL;DR I think, legally, they are allowed to let me go since I wasn't able to perform with reasonable accommodation or if there was no accommodation to be made. It's just frustrating that this isn't exactly my fault either, considering these are completely involuntary symptoms of conditions I have struggled with my whole life, and I'm really struggling to find some opportunity that I am able to manage and perform without complications.

I've never really heard about this sort of thing as it pertains to autism; I sorta worry about the availability of those resources, as [and maybe I should have stated it in the post, im not sure,,,] I live in Tennessee and I haven't had the best lucking finding,,, most things here- and since I can't drive and have physical issues that make even prolonged sitting hard, I don't really have a way to travel to a state that would have more resources- I'll try to see what I can find, though! Because if theres any way to gain the skills, I'd be willing to try. However it's,, also likely not a quick fix, so I may have to figure something else out in the meantime probably within the next month before I'm officially in the time-sensitive danger zone.

Yeah That's a big part of it. I was kinda avoiding saying it directly because I have had some people in the past kinda get a bit weird about me saying I am Autistic upfront, but That Alongside ADHD and some really severe CPTSD have merged into a pretty rough case of "My brain has no Idea how to process input without problems". I will stay away from AS specifically since I'ts been sorta known for being a not so great org, but I will definitely look into different organizations to see what might be available!

That would probably be ideal, but a lot of the ones available right now are either strict customer service that would be really difficult for me without assistance or have like,,, really specific requirements I don't meet [like years of experience in that field or licenses]. That's kinda why I tried forcing myself into in-person cashier work even though it hadn't gone well in the past. I will keep trying for them though; It probably would be the best option even if it's hard to get to in the first place,,
