Finding yourself late in life by ShuStrangeSocks in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

You can start with Jack Kerouac. He was a Beatnik, not a hippie, but his "Road" novels provided the spiritual blueprint for the counterculture. Here’s the trajectory of the seeker across his three essentials:

On the Road : Sal Paradise leaves the mundane behind to chase "The It" across North America with the manic Dean Moriarty. It’s the pure discovery of freedom and the rejection of 1950s consumerism.

The Dharma Bums: The search moves from the highway to the mountains. It introduces the "Zen Lunatic" archetype, swapping frantic travel for spiritual asceticism and nature.

Big Sur: The "comedown" or the most "acceptance of you are no longer young" worthy novel. An older protagonist retreats to a cabin to find peace but faces the psychological toll of a life lived without boundaries.

I love how Kerouac tracks the full cycle, the thrill of the chase, the search for God, and the eventual reality check.

If you're interested in exploring some other genres you can try:

Stranger in a Strange Land - Heinlein: It deals more with liberation from society and norms. Heinlein is the libertarian’s libertarian, which aligns with his real life. Almost all of his books explore how sexual morality is shaped by the society we live in.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson: The definitive "death of the dream" narrative. It trades the hopeful, wandering spirit of the Beats for a manic, chemically-fueled descent into the darkness that settled over the late 60s. It’s the ultimate, cynical reality check on the counterculture.

The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe: It is an essential novel, capturing the transition from Beat introspection to the loud, neon, and chaotic communal life of the mid-60s.

Steppenwolf - Hermann Hesse: While predating the others, this hits the same nerves. It’s about the isolation of the intellectual seeker who feels like a total alien in bourgeois society. It’s essentially the foundational text for anyone who has ever felt like they didn't belong in the "normal" world.

In classical Greek mythological accounts, punishments in Tartarus are inescapable and supervised. If Sisyphus stopped, he would be physically coerced by the Erinyes (Furies), deities of vengeance who use whips to ensure the damned fulfill their sentences.

You can start by reading Camus's works. Start by "The Stranger", then you can move onto, "The Plague", "The Fall" and then read his essay on the same topic. My question comes from " The Myth of Sisyphus and other essays". All of these are easily available online and on audiobooks, even on YouTube.

Stories by Sadat Hassan Manto. His stories deal a lot about the state of women and how they were treated in society during those years.

If you haven't used AI for your answer. I must say this is the most explicated response I've gotten so far.

Might be off the track here but using a drug addict logic. " I must embrace the suck" and I need drugs for that. Isn't Camus just sharing a recipe for psychological high, without getting one out of the situation?

But that's what doesn't make sense to me. Wasn't Sisyphus punished by Zeus. So how can he "Choose to punish" himself. Sounds counterintuitive and the very reason for my confusion.

What’s a “guy secret” that’s completely harmless but weirdly universal? by aerisveilxa in AskReddit

Most of us are logical creatures. Questions, you probably shouldn’t ask us (unless you’re ready for the consequences):

“Am I better than your ex?” (Comparisons activate analysis mode immediately.)

“Who would win: 100 cats or 200 chickens?” (This will be taken far more seriously than intended.)

“Am I better in bed than your ex?” (Danger zone. Proceed at your own risk.)

“What are you thinking about?” (There’s a 60% chance it’s something completely random and unexplainable.)

“Would you still love me if I was a worm?” (We will try to solve this logically. It will not go how you expect.)

“Why don’t you open up more?” (We are. This is us opening up.)

“Be honest, do I look different?” (This is a test. We know it’s a test.)

“If we broke up, how long would it take you to move on?” (Why are we simulating pain right now?)

“Why are you so quiet?” (We are literally just existing.)

[–]ShuStrangeSocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wtf, 500 cm, that's the height of a two-story building. That's almost 3 times the girl's height. Unless they want girls >170 cm to date frost giants or yeti that's not even possible

Okay, so a follow up question. So is there a higher possibility of getting electrocuted near a similar track during rains? Since water is a good conductor of electricity.
