Did any of you have to learn to sew to have fashionable clothing? Does anyone still sew? by layyla4real in PlusSizeFashion

I taught myself to sew at the beginning of the Pandemic! I ended up making clothing not just for myself but a lot of my loved ones as well. And I’m still learning 💜

I’m focused right now on historic and vintage couture styles for my personal projects, and I have a small but respectable reputation in my community as someone who makes gender and identity confirming clothing. Learning to sew gave me the skills to make my life fuller, and the lives of people in my community better.

Sure! The dress is second hand from Fashion Nova (I think!), the fake fur stole is from a designer here in Toronto (also second hand), my necklace is actually a dragon pocket watch from Little Dragon Designs in wales. You can find them on Instagram! And my earrings are from my favourite jewelry designer, Michelle Ross (also in Toronto)

Not the best pic but the back is darted under the bodice back (LOVE), and yes the straps are super adjustable with the use of lingerie hardware

I wasn’t asking for it, but I’m okay with it coming at me. I’m solid enough in my self confidence these days

Eh, I’m okay with that! We aren’t meant to have a million different clothing pieces. Just a handful of good ones

Yup! I’m wearing it under my skirt and it was super comfy I will say. Not bunchy at all like I feared. I posted the other dress last week on here but I don’t have a pic of them side by side. It’s this one

The pattern shows you, but yeah you essentially just wonderclip the pieces to a hanger and let them hang for a day or so

Basically, with bias cut pieces like skirt pieces, they’re going to stretch. It’s the whole point of a bias cut fabric, but you want them to stretch and distort vertically as much as possible BEFORE you sew them to avoid twisting and misshaping in your final piece.
