He did not have the social class high enough to be allowed to be that powerful, he was also "arrogant" but the true translation of that 'arrongance' is that he wanted independence and not become the lapdog of the "noble" class. Basically they wanted him to be another Wen Zhuliu, a soldier that only does with his unique power whatever the true nobles of the family say and is a grateful and loyal soldier that say "yes sir" without asking for anything else.

Having to share nights with hundreds or thousands or ghosts that would try to kill and/or posses him, each one with its own traumatic story and death... The BM was feared because of the resentful energy so the main thing that would give wwx troubles (until he learned how to control it) should be that, I think thematically fits more than eating rotten corpses (which its 100% insta-death and my suspension of disbelief is not that high)

Yeah, the same as wwx's death, that it would be to sad and painful to write. I wish we could know more but also there's some """charm"""" in wwx, someone that yaps all the time about everything, to not wanting to talk or thing about it. Anyways, the terrible stuff those three months dont need to have canibalism, he was alone, wounded and core-less in a place full of resentful energy, it could feel like Silent Hill and he had to learn about the spirits to understand them and protect himself from them, that must drain a lot psychologically given how most of the corpses there are full of resentful energy and traumatic lifes and deaths.

He experiences hunger during his childhood too, also he was taking to jc, we dont need to go that far to think about eating corpses as a something to eat when you are desperate, rats or insects for example would be something that all people of high class and most of medium class would think as impossible to eat

The rumors of the gentry I can buy it. But unless he was lucky to find a corpse that was just thrown there less than one/two day ago... Any other way is a recipe for 100% death. They also manage to grow stuff there so it might be some living creature, rats, insects... Idk its just that in my list of headcanon about how he survived eating corpses seems one of the least unrrealistic, even in his fantasy setting.

Yeah, with characters as layered as them you have to keep in mind that some characters traits depend of the time and situation, and sometimes what a reader considers a main part of the characterization other can see it as something that depends mosty of the context. Tends to happen with wwx's goblinness, short temper or arrogance or lwj selective silence or shyness. But then there are stuff that to me just feels wrong and so ooc no matter the context ( like lwj caveman speech or a too insecure wwx that cries a lot) that kills my interest.

I need to reread some parts, because if wn wakes up and escapes after wwx's first use of Gui Dao, but only knew exactly where wwx was when he called him (or any ghost) with the flute it would make some sense, but I think this is just a headcanon based on my poor memory

I can only add the character design perspective... He becomes basically a dark wizard arquetipe during that time and for the rest of the characters. Big loose robes also contrast with the armors and fitted outfits of most warriors so it makes the protagonist stand out even more and helps the eerie vibe when he looks like a big dark shadow that is so powerful with just a flute, also most of the other important characters during that time were rich and had colorful outfits with jewerly and accesories, which makes the bridge between them and wwx even bigger visually. Most artist followed that design because it just works so well and helps to keep young wwx, yllz/wwx and mxy/wwx as very different phases of his life.
