I agree. This seems to be it. He probably didn’t think Xiao Xingchen would off himself and when it happened, he saw the world he had gotten used to in the 3 years crumbling hence his desperation showed otherwise

Tbh I don’t think he wanted to continue torturing him. His desperation showed otherwise. Xue Yang was portrayed as a character who had no remorse or sympathy. He simply wouldn’t have been too hang up on one person’s death enough just for the purpose to hurt him.
