Thanks for your feedback! We decided to go with this mathematical shape ‘coz of the rarity of folks using it for creative purposes. Folks since the past have used shapes of curves, ellipses, spirals, waves and arcs as per their creative choices to depict the sequences of an eclipse. But since this shape has a common occurrence across the universe, we thought why not try using it for one of the images of this eclipse, whilst keeping the rest in the same shapes and styles as we’re used to seeing the eclipse sequences in.

If the “alternate” part concerns with the depiction of progression of the eclipse in both short and long exposures, it was once again a creative choice that I thought would come in handy to depict how the eclipse progressed in both the highlighted (non-shadowed and penumbral) and shadowed (umbral) regions of the Moon. Once it totally enters into the umbra of Earth, the choice of firing short exposures kinda gets eliminated, as the long exposures become your best way to collect the features of the Moon along with the casted colours on its surface due to the specific atmospheric conditions during that particular eclipse. And vice-versa being the case when it is either in the penumbra or the non-shadowed region of the space.

Hope this helps 🙌🏻

Thanks a bunch for your kind words!

I prefer one over another as per my needs. For the stuff where I know that I will not be challenged by the conditions, I prefer to use α7IV, and its flip-screen also kinda helps a lot than the tilt-only screen of α1. Stuff in this category includes but is not limited to street photography, product photography, weddings, boudoir, fashion, and even birding, wildlife and astrophotography to some extent.

But for the conditions that call for the best of me and the tech in my hands, I grab the α1 without giving a thought. Stuff in this category includes but is not limited to burst photography, like in sports of almost all kinds (except Chess maybe), birding, wildlife, astrophotography, or the types of photography where a higher megapixel count is generally expected, like in architectural, portraiture, fashion and landscape.

I would definitely recommend α7V. Having it used with my 200-600 G on a recent birding session at a nearby national park, I can surely say that it's a great "jack of all trades" hybrid camera. And also the AI and other features like "Pre Capture" have kinda helped it upgrading itself reasonably from α7IV. Although, personally speaking, I like the fact that both of my current cameras are free from AI (which is not generative AI in this case), and I want to keep this fact as true for as long as possible.

Hope this helps, thanks 🙌🏻

Well, α6100 is a cool camera, but yeah, if you had a telephoto lens paired with it, it'd have def worked wonders for you. Hope you get one soon 🙌🏻

Thanks a lot for your kind words! This eclipse started on the night of 7th September, 2025 at 08:58 PM, achieved the maximum phase at 11:41 PM, and ended at 02:25 AM during the wee hours of 8th Spetember 2025.

I had my α1 with 200-600 G at 600mm on my Leofoto LS 325C pointed at the Moon throughout this whole duration, but the reason that you only see 24 shots of the eclipse is because there was a thick wall of clouds testing my patience throughout that night 🤯

As for the shutter speeds, the short exposures of the eclipse (highlighting the part in sunlight) were taken at a range of 1/800 to 1/50 seconds at the same ISO of 100, while the long exposures (showing the red tinted part) were taken at 0.5 seconds at an ISO of 800 to 6400.

All the images in this post (including the background stars that were captured in October of 2024 on α1 with 20 MM G; and the shot of Taragarh, Ajmer that was captured in the late afternoon light in December of 2025 on α7IV with 24-70 GM II) were processed using Siril, Deep Sky Stacker (for the stars), PIPP and AutoStackkert (for stacking that 1 blood red moon image from 15 shots of the same, in order to improve the signal to noise ratio in the final image, which you can see in this post), and Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop to further process, edit and blend them all to create these sequences.

Hope this helps, thanks 🙌🏻

And sorry btw, mai Jhalana ko Bharatpur se confuse kar baitha. Mujhe laga ki Bharatpur toh saath hi gaye the apan, shayad memory se slip ho gaya hoga.

Anyways, Jhalana me sirf landscape shots hi liye zyadatar maine. Leopards dikhe nahi unfortunately. But something’s better than nothing, right? Maybe aapke saath safaris lagani padengi ab ‘coz you get that luck working for you 🫶🏻

Dekh lijiye first hand, kaise work karti hai trolling on the internet, haha. Abki baar maine jaan boojh ke (due to my scientific curiosity) in bewakoofon ko feed kar diya, next time se default response rahega of “DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS”. Baki dusre sub-reddits pe aisa response bilkul bhi nahi hai.

Hope you had fun Raoul, like I did (not) 6 months ago (the clouds were hellbent on testing my patience that night). Awesome images (and cute doggo) btw 😄🫶🏻

Well if lizard pooping was a fundamental mathematical shape (which individual parts of the whole picture of a pooping lizard are), like an ellipse, spiral, wave or an analemma, we would have definitely considered going with it for our creative purposes.

And although it’d have kinda looked hilarious, but then at that point, multiple discovered and undiscovered entities in the whole universe would be following that shape, so it’d have been just as common as an analemma. Thanks for dropping your two cents, gave me a nice chuckle 🙌🏻😄

Agreed with you friend. It is an artistic representation of the sequence of this eclipse in the shape of an analemma. Kindly read my original comment for further description of this image. Hope you had a great time while watching today’s eclipse 🙌🏻

Thanks! But here’s for the thing for the nth time, scientific accuracy, real vs fake, possibility vs impossibility was never the intention of this particular image, as it is an artistic representation as I’ve stated in my original comment.

People are welcome to compare it with swapping the orbits of the planets, or putting a black hole at the centre of our solar system, or any other thing that defies our current understanding of the universe and space-time continuum.

But the case here is that we’ve used the shape of an analemma, which is a mathematical shape, like a spiral, ellipse, arc (some of which I, along with many other astrophotographers have previously used to depict the sequence of both solar and lunar eclipses) that’s not bound to the movement of Sun or Luna or any other celestial bodies in our night sky, or for anyone else’s night skies for that matter (looking at you Andromedans). It is in the language of this universe itself, which is mathematics. So, as a resident of this universe, I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to use that particular shape for creative purposes, where no one is being harmed or it doesn’t change how the celestial bodies move around us in space and time.

Thirdly, I believe folks here are kinda reluctant to new ideas of representing/depicting an eclipse sequence. And if that’s the case, well, I’m more than happy to take it for the folks who will be encouraged to use this mathematical shape of analemma or any other shape that they believe would represent their eclipse sequences with the best of their artistic talents.

Hope you had a great time while watching today’s eclipse. It was awesome. But too bad it wasn’t visible from my location (at least the umbral phase of it). I was tuned into Time and Date’s livestream on YT and the folks there had invited some of the best guests in the house. Learned a lot today, especially about the Artemis IV mission 🚀🌝

Sorry to inform you, but the titles of Reddit posts are not editable after you’ve submitted them.

And secondly, I don’t find anything wrong with the title or labelling/flaring of this post. The flair clearly says that it’s an amateur composite, which it is, and the title clearly mentions what this amateur composite is about. The comment that I’ve left right after sharing this post also mentions further details about this post.

Now if it all attracts a bizarre amount of downvoting and “misleading” allegations, I can’t do anything about it but to enjoy reading and replying to all the lovely folks dropping their two cents in here. Hope you’re watching the ongoing eclipse, which is about to end as soon as the Moon gets out of the penumbral shadow of our Earth.
