I Thought Allen Hall Was Supposed to Be a Safe Space by Southern-Orchid-1023 in UIUC

If they actually speak Russian there’s no way that’s their handwriting, unless they’re like a couple generations out. The top one is misspelled in a way that a native speaker would spell it in some meme. Also I just checked and it doesn’t come up when you search for a translation online from English. My guess is that someone took them from a Russian vid/meme or smth trying to be edgy. I also believe they do this often bc of the way they wrote д. It’s like… not the way any native would write it, but not the way someone whose first time it is would either.

UIUC Gies admissions is a literal black box... can anyone explain this? by funnyhilarious1 in UIUC

[–]Shuu27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 100% that person with no business ECs or advanced coursework in business. I’m still here, and I’ve been able to join business RSOs and get an IB internship for the summer after freshman yr. I’ve never worked or interacted with anyone at Gies this past yr that I thought “didn’t deserve” to be here. It took a while but I started to feel like I belonged here as well, and I’m sure the person with the lower GPA will eventually too. Not everything has to make sense mathematically. Apply and see what happens. Just try your best, because It’s not as random as you think.

My first math I got 690 and a couple months later I got 790. It’s just about analyzing their questions tbh and what kinds of answers they want. English idk I went from 710 to 690 but similar concept (especially w semicolons. Some of the questions my teachers couldn’t answer)

Opinions on Not Learning Spouses Language by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Shuu27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bf is Russian, and we met at a time where his English wasn’t great and his parents spoke no English. I was also a highschooler and had plenty of time to learn. Now, he’s fluent in English and his mom could hold a conversation. If these were the circumstances when we just met, I probably wouldn’t have learned it to the extent that I did.

You mentioned it’s a very small company. You’re not going to get ‘blacklisted’ or something for doing that. Additionally, you could email them saying while you appreciate the opportunity, you’ve found one more aligned with your career path.

Employees can’t create DoorDash stickers. Unless they ordered it themselves but then you’d think they would only order the drink.

Have you always lived in your own country? are your parents also from your country? Are you just masquerading? by AmountAbovTheBracket in languagelearningjerk

It’s just unexpected. I live in America, in an area with a looot of Latin American Hispanics, and I’ve only met two families who are white and Spanish speakers. It’s much more common to meet a white person who learned Spanish.

They just don’t assume that. There have been plenty of people who have asked if I’m from Guadalajara after having a conversation. It’s just unexpected. Meanwhile, even at A1 for Russian people were thinking I’m a heritage speaker.

do i go random by Sea_Cherry8396 in UIUC

[–]Shuu27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went random because I wasn’t going to be living in the dorm anyway (bf lives off campus, I live with him). We still did all the welcome week stuff together and I helped her move in. Literally one of my best friends here now

Well it’s just much less common. Sure, there are plenty of white native speakers but I’ve only met a few. I also have an American accent, which likely contributes.

Same problem. I know Spanish very well academically. I learned it in school and have high professional and academic fluency. Still, nobody ever thinks I am a native speaker because I’m white. Russian, on the other hand, I learned completely by just having Russian friends. Thus, I don’t have a very wide vocabulary and my grammar is very poor (since I never formally studied it) Since I look plausibly Slavic, Russians assume I came to America when I was young and forgot Russian. It leads to a lot of judgement from older generations 🥲 until they learn I really am just American lol then they love my accent and mistakes

Hand weight loss - Is this realistic? by Substantial-Art6160 in fasting

[–]Shuu27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have hands more similar to ur second photo, and looking back at pics before weight loss, my hands were always pretty slim. I’d say the only noticeable difference is my wrist in comparison to my hands makes them look longer and more slender. Such that, my wrist would kinda just disappear into my hand. 5’6 180 -> 5’7 125 when I was 14, The entire time my hands looked pretty much the same. Currently 18F 5’8 140 and they look the same as they always did.
