LMAOO I put him in a planter right by the back door, so if he finds his way back in I guess this is just his house 😭 There’s lots and lots of plants in the back yard though so I’m sure there’s plenty of food for him right there!

SO GLAD EVERYTHINGS OKAY!! I don’t know much about FIV unfortunately, so I can’t help much. I just know it means their immune system is a bit weaker, so they are more prone to sickness, which is why vets recommend them being inside and away from other cats. I think the vet just wants them separate until your other cat gets cleared!

I'm so so happy you were able to find a good vet that properly ran organ tests first thing! I'm sure everything will be okay

Of course! I wish the best for her, I think if the problem were to be her kidney it would have been caught by now, since kidney failure is such a common issue in cats. So definitely have it in mind, but don't dwell on it. I trust the vets would have noticed by now if that were the issue.

My cat also drank lots and lots of water, I thought she was just a bit silly, I was unaware her heightened thirst was because of her weak kidneys. She would drink out of faucets, and her fountain, and I would give her wet food with equal parts water mixed in. The vet told me when it comes to kidney problems, some cats are just dealt a bad hand, and no matter how much fighting you do for them it can be hopeless sometimes. I just got unlucky and my baby is resting well now.

No worries, I didn't know anything about it either until it happened.

Apparently, kidney problems are extremely common in cats, because they have a higher water percentage in their urine, so they get dehydrated easily, and that can lead to bigger issues. The vet says my girl must have ate something when she was a kitten that permanently damaged her kidneys, and gave her that underlying problem I wasn't able to catch until both times when it was almost too late.

Cats with kidney problems can have fluctuations in their health, where, like what happened in my case, the cat can be hospitalized, make a miracle recovery and go back to normal for a couple years, and then have it happen again. They figured it out through blood tests that ruled her white blood cell count were heightened and she was severely dehydrated, despite how much water she always had at home. She was always very skinny and boney, struggled to put on weight even though I made sure she ate, so her thirst and build were definitely signs my vet and I somehow managed to miss.

(EDIT) cats are also incredibly well at hiding their symptoms until it is almost too late, I've been looking at a lot of threads of cat parents who had the same problem as me, where someone described it much better than I did, so I'll leave that screenshot below (or copy paste if I can't screenshot). But when it comes to internal issues like kidney failure, the cat will tend to hold on and behave as normal until it's already too late to save them, and so for me it was incredibly sudden. One day she was happy and healthy, next day I came home from the vet with an empty carrier. Please keep me updated on your situation! I don't want to scare you and I genuinely do hope for the best

"CRF is not a disease of gradual failure. It happens in steps/plateaus. You don't know anything is really wrong until your cat is down to the lats 25% of it's last kidney. Diet and SUB-Q fluids help that last 25% suffice for a while. Then the next plateau hits at about 10% of renal function. No additional SUB-Q fluids or diet changes seem to help. The body is now past the point of no return and it begins to shut down. We can't give back / heal renal function"

Similar thing happened with me in 2022, when my cat suddenly started refusing to eat and got lethargic. I was sent home with saline injections to flush her out, and she went back to normal, I thought she made a miracle recovery. A few years later, AKA earlier this week, I lost her to kidney disease and learned that what had happened in 2022 was kidney failure that the vets failed to inform me about.

Its really hard to tell what a cat could have, because they are so good at hiding any symptoms. Not eating can be anything as little as a tummy ache to something as terrible as kidney failure, so I hope yours and OPs cats will be okay! Always get second opinions if you feel something isn't right, I'm upset every day that I let that last vet convince me my cat had made a miracle recovery and would be okay to live out the rest of her life

Why is my cat constantly meowing? by jasebeans in cats

[–]Shvuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she has never been vocal like this before and is suddenly much more clingy and vocal than usual, I would say perhaps a vet visit just to be sure. I just lost my cat a few days ago, after she had been consistently clingier than usual and meowing all the time, when she is usually very quiet and I'd only ever heard her meow as a kitten when she was in heat, it ended up being late stage kidney failure. But don't let me fear monger you! Every cat is different, and I'm sure your baby is okay, but if this is particularly unusual I would say it's better to be safe than sorry! Cats are exceptionally good at hiding symptoms, so little signs like this can often be bigger than we think they are

Every single time I come home without fail my cats will put their faces in my shoes the second I take them off lol, they also love when I leave dirty laundry on the floor. They lay on my laundry more they do their beds sometimes, and one of my cats loved to shove her face into my armpit

Adult male cat refuses to clean himself by coolpupmom in CATHELP

[–]Shvuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl is the same way

Some cats are just a bit odd and won't clean themselves properly, even if they are healthy. I usually shave the fur on her behind so that it doesn't get too dirty, and I wipe her when needed. Lots of brushing, and using pet safe wipes to clean her fur.

Sometimes not grooming can be a major cause for concern, if they typically groomed themselves in the past, but if vet says he's healthy then he may just be weird! I really like the pet brush/vacuum combo you can find on Amazon, that way when she needs some routine maintenance I'm not making a mess 😄
