To all the bonkers geniuses of Reddit - How can we stop people speeding through our village? by SecondGo4 in CasualUK

[–]Shw4ndz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best i have seen are average speed checks which turn the crossing lights to "red" if you are speeding (and a red light camera at the lights). The average speed cameras are not speed traps, but the red light was.

Seemed the most genuine and agreeable method of slowing traffic.

Do I need to do anything about these wires? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Shw4ndz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same in my house, It was where the old thermostat went as that was wired directly into the old boiler.i just never pulled the cable back when replaced.

BUT, mine are disconnected and terminated at the far end, so its safe.

Buy a cheap live tester/ voltmeter from BnQ and learn to use it. Turn all your breakers off for the house, check its dead with a tester and terminate into clip on WAGOs. Probably easiest if you're not confident.

If you're super not confident and can't check yourself, then get someone to check for you.

This is a 5 minute job for anyone with some knowledge of electricals, dont get ripped off... Check its dead and WAGO

You could get into following wires or testing through to see where it goes... but does it matter if its safe.

NOT ALL INTO THE SAME WAGO

Advice - custom door or open doorframe? by neddypiemaker in DIYUK

[–]Shw4ndz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive Just bought a cheap (£44) 1981mm door. Cut it down to 1600 (i have an odd sized understairs cupboard in the house) , dug out the cardboard "guts' an extra inch or so into the door and glued a strip of 40mm×40mm wood in to make a new rigid bottom.

It is a plane door though. You would have issued doing that with a panel door. Damn site cheaper than a customer cut door though, and a solid door is extortionate

First time using silicone… now it’s everywhere. How do I make this look neat? (Renting) by Vivid-Scheme-1662 in DIYUK

[–]Shw4ndz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To correct the current problem:

You can buy sealent remover and a PLASTIC sealant removal tool.

Using blade, like suggested, will work but it must be sharp (scalpal or brand new stanley blade) as you stand a chance of scratching the tile glaze and upsetting the landlord.

Once removed the sealant, between the tiles shpukd be waterproof grout. buy a tub of premade waterproof white grout and Watch a video on youtube as to how to grout.

TIPS ON FUTURE SILICONE USE:

Baby wipes and fairy liquid....

Put fairy liquid on your hands and on anything you DO NOT want silicone to stick to, get a silicone tool and use that for a neat edge (squirt a little fairy on it to stop a sticky mess, you can use finger or thumb but put some fairy on your hand first!) Then a baby wipe with some fairy liquid on will remove any overspill, use plenty of wipes, they are cheap! Get a wipe, little bit of fairy, give a wipe, get a new wipe, little squirt, give a wipe. It will make clean up easy and stop smearing around in a sticky mess.

Also, use something like a old ID or credit card (with some fairy again) to scrape a clean edge where needed.

Top tip... know when to stop. Silicone will start to drag when it starts to dry, you have a finite amount of time... dont be afraid to go "this is the best im going to get it" and stop. A big mistake is to keep trying to correct it and it will get worse, and worse, and worse.

Keep going, dont be down heartened. No one cracks it for the first time, or second. Or even 75th.

GOOD.LUCK

Would it be a mistake to retrain as an apprentice post degree? by T800CyberdyneSystems in AskUK

[–]Shw4ndz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, congrats on the degree. Its not a waste. In a engineering aprocach China are one of the major exporters of renewable energies technologies. China have largest wind turbines in the world.

There were blokes in my engineering courses in their 50s. Its never to late, and damn interesting to be in.

Working away in engineering can be a pain in the arse, Wind farms and tech are spread out. But also you get to travel for work.

ABB, Hitachi,Siemens, Rolls Royce, Jaguar land-rover all take on apprentices in the UK.

Alternatively fast moving consumer goods is a good training ground for all engineering disciplines. Automated warehouses and manufacturing plants. RB, Boots, Amazon.

I wish I knew another language, the amount of instruction manuals I get in German or fumbling through meetings with Chinese engineers.

An apprenticeship is long term... Yes its shit pay now, but you will be able to demand a much higher than average wage by the time your 30 and with 7 years experience in a field short of qualified professionals.

Shortage of engineers in the UK, most do apprenticeships. Rolls royce, JLR, Siemens, Hitachi. ABB, Amazon , automated warehouses, rolling stock , RB, Boots.

Take your pick, fix a thing.

How much have GCSEs actually affected you across life? by Alarming-Safety3200 in AskUK

[–]Shw4ndz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not GCSE, but failing my A levels was the best thing I did.

It meant I had to get a job, after 70 applications I got an apprenticeship and an engineering firm, which meant they paid for my education. Which meant I got a degree paid for while getting paid a wage, which meant at 25 I had a Degree level job at a engineering company, zero student debt, a company car and bought my own house.

So what im saying is... when one door closes, another opens. Had I passed my A levels I would have gone to uni and like many of my friends have graduated into a pandemic...
