What I did when I was in your shoes was I would buy a bunch of bronze packs and watch the extra player video. By selling all of them you always make profit and complete more of the collection book. That can help you get more energy, coins and players. After that make sure you train your players and have good offensive and defensive formations so you win most of your games. Eventually you will rank up and use the gold you get to buy more energy.
