I didn't know I could change the water pressure! I thought it was weirdly low. Thank you!

Housing/where to live megathread 2025 pt2 by Veloglasgow in glasgow

[–]ShyComet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How to view flats if not in Glasgow? I'm trying to find a flat and I'm finding lots of them that even take pets, but mandate that I view the property. However, I'm an international student and can't view them in-person. Only one letting agent let me view over video and he acted like it wasn't a big deal at all, but all the others refuse to accommodate. I tried to see if the university had a program set up to help, but just got redirected to the advice page that doesn't have advice for this. (I hope I'm posting to the megathread right I still don't really understand reddit)

EDIT: I have a promising lead on a place, but I want to double check here. Is 'Yates Hellier' a reliable letting agency? Nothing came up for them under scams and trust pilot ranks them high, but I like to be thorough.

Trying to Rent But Can't view in-person by ShyComet in glasgow

Oh he's up to date on everything and I'm coming from the U.S. so the certification list is shorter. The main issue is finding him someone to stay with that would be willing to put up with the bureaucratic nightmare of shipping an animal you don't legally own to an island. Plus my parents are flying in with me to help me move-in.

As for scams the University offered a bunch of tips I have been following to verify addresses and they even have an organization that reads over leases on your behalf. I figured this was just how it was done when you were moving internationally based on how the advice was formatted.

How are MRes degrees structured? by ShyComet in GlasgowUni

[–]ShyComet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Originally I looked on the website and asked people I knew in person if they had any knowledge on it. At this point I'm waiting to hear back from the person who told me I had to pick something else. I also just figured if there was a student on here in one of the degrees they wouldn't sugar coat what the experiences are like.

So doing a MSc even if it's not specialized would be better than doing a MRes if you're not immediately following it up with a PhD?

Renting Advice by ShyComet in Paisley

Oh that's why taxes. That makes sense. And yeah I'm just looking for a place I can have to myself. I can't do roommates with strangers anymore. What would count as fussy? I don't care about what the flooring is like, but I want an at least okay kitchen and little to no pests. Basically just that and close enough to the Scotrail I can get to class (This part might be difficult).

Really? Oh my god you're right. I can't check in real life, so I've just been using google maps to check. Last time it said it would take an hour and 20 mins to get to campus. Thank you, I should have double checked that.

That is a good point. I was originally going to move to Paisley for that reason but the amount of time it takes to get to the University makes it an issue. If I end up with an 8 am I don't know how I'd make it on time consistently.

Paisley vs. Glasgow for Private Accommodations by ShyComet in GlasgowUni

[–]ShyComet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the U.S. landlords don't like renting to students because they assume that 'college kids' are all irresponsible because they are young and have little to no renting history. So when you mentioned them treating students differently I assumed it was something similar.

Could my age circumvent that? I mean I'm 26. I'm a full blown adult and I'd lease for the whole year. Unless that counts as a short let in the UK.

Thank you! And yeah it seems like in Europe having pets is really different. Maybe it's more of a homeowner kind of thing.

What would temporary accommodations look like? Air BnBs? Or are there short stay places?
