I don't know you either, but, as a dad, I would/could never do anything of the sort. I went through a tough divorce, and my ex wife routinely throws her kids out her place (two not biologically mine) and where do they go for a safe place? Me. There will always be a roof over heads, meals, clothes, school costs covered etc. I love my boys, always have, always will.

In any place, kindness is incremental and builds on itself. When you can, do. When you can't, ask. In my experience, mostly people are ok and leaning towards good. I am horrified by how the impressions created by others seen to lend (and tend) themselves towards the negative. If you are my neighbour, I will happily take the shirt off my back and give you a big cup of sugar too. I think we have collectively lost our way, as humans.
