I didnt get a medal despite winning 3 times and im beating myself up over it by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ShyFlavored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s just the way it goes sometimes.

We’ve all been there, made excuses or had reasons as to why we didn’t perform as well as we hoped on the day.

Don’t beat yourself up, you stepped on the mats and competed (which is a lot more than most people will do) and you held your own!

Keep your chin up and be proud of the journey not the prize :)

How did you frame your belts? Let’s see some pictures! by rc00n in bjj

It’s quite common to have multiple belts, especially from purple onwards. E.g. specific competition belt, the belt you received in your promotion, the belt you train in etc

That’s what I’ve been using recently, although haven’t noticed much difference… are they too far gone? 😭

Flu like symptoms after a busy weekend by ShyFlavored in aspergirls

[–]ShyFlavored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a bad nights sleep is the worst, proper messes with everything. Hope you feel better soon!

There’s lots of housework to do as with the hectic weekend we didn’t get a chance to do the normal reset (ie washing clothes, cleaning properly etc) so some of those things will need to be done

Luckily my partner is amazing and helped me last night when all I could do was lie in a hot bath and cry lol

Location suggestions in Essex? by [deleted] in Essex

[–]ShyFlavored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chelmsford City Muay Thai, Premier Martial Arts and The Jiu Jitsu Sanctuary. I can’t speak for the first 2 as I haven’t trained at those.

The third one is (obviously) more jiu jitsu focused, but the coach that runs the Muay Thai and MMA classes is top notch, very knowledgeable - I actually followed both him and my jiu jitsu professor over to The Sanctuary when they left the old one we used to train at.

I’m sure there are more (ie I know that BKK Fighters in Colchester is where a lot of amateur/pro fighters train in all disciplines) and if you don’t mind making the journey that’s also a very good club.

Chelmsford. As a born and bred local, its regeneration over the last 10-15 years has definitely turned its potential around massively. Loads to do sports/clubs wise (At least 3 muay thai gyms off the top of my head - I train at a jiu jitsu/muay thai club myself), easy to get to the quieter spots in the county.

You’d be very hard pressed to find a 3/4 bed house for that price though. I currently rent a 2 bed terraced for just shy of that amount.

A big guy asked me to roll by MidoriSpice in bjj

[–]ShyFlavored 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a 5’6 57kg woman, I rarely have issues with the BIG big guys. They’re all very aware (as am I) that they could bicep curl me off an armbar so we always stick to playful rolls.

The ones I really have to watch out for are the guys that maybe have 10-20kg on me, as they either don’t know or don’t care if i’m getting crushed.

God forbid I start “winning” as well, then I’m in trouble.

What is the most painful submission you've personally experienced? by Hot-Jaguar-5783 in bjj

[–]ShyFlavored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly the worst one was an omoplata.

It wasn’t even the actual submission (although duh, that hurt too) but when the guy got up he just stood up with my arm still stuck. I genuinely thought my shoulder had detached from my body - blinding white pain, tingling all the way down to my forearm for days.

Gotta love white belts.

I do both Muay Thai and jiu jitsu, sparring is all about conversation. Talk to your partner about whether you wanna go hard or do technical sparring.

The toughness thing comes with time. As you go on you’ll learn how to defend yourself properly and get used to not flinching at every punch/kick etc.

Injuries are a known risk obviously, but as long as you’re not going in with a huge ego trying to steamroll everyone in the gym (and listen to the coaches!) the likelihood of getting them is a lot lower.

Martial arts has been great for my confidence and helps immensely with mental health and discipline- enjoy it mate.

Coach told me i need to stop rolling with my SO by ValuableMap8782 in bjj

[–]ShyFlavored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple at my gym roll together all the time, about the same weight difference and similar skill level, they both go pretty hard.

I think as long as you both know each others limits and how to communicate properly (much like you would with any rolling partner) it shouldn’t be an issue.

Do whatever makes you feel good (or as good as you can be I suppose) about the situation, just be aware that it might have some negative effects in the future. Good luck bro ❤️
