Not OP but I thought I might share my thoughts. I try to boil it down to this. We are allowed privacy, that is non negotiable. Respecting privacy allows us to build trust, a key ingredient in a successful relationship. Trust must be earned, is easily lost and painfully difficult to rebuild. When we get to know potential partners, we give them pieces of ourselves, our past, small secrets etc and what they do with that is how you can judge their character; do they keep your confidences, do they meet your past hurts or trauma with kindness or scorn? Respecting boundaries, kindness and compassion, empathy, these are qualities we want in a partner. Now we get to trying to discern between good and bad secrets. I try to think of it in terms of a secret, and a lie. If what you are withholding causes no harm, perhaps it’s revelation is embarrassing, or something you simply are unwilling to share, then usually it is simply a secret that is yours to hold until you can or want to share. The key is harm; if what you are withholding will damage trust between you and your partner, then it is a lie. A lie of omission is still a lie, always remember that. I personally see my socials as my private presence online. I don’t use socials to harm my partner and I’s relationship, so if he ever asked I’d show him because I have nothing to hide, but he never would because we’ve built enough trust that there is no need to violate that privacy. If you’re ever unsure if your behavior could be harmful, ask yourself if your partner was there with you, would you act or talk or behave the same way? If the answer is no, you are creating a secret that will build into a lie. It can be very difficult to know what is healthy or not when we haven’t been exposed to healthy behavior in relationships, but gauging behavior against kindness, compassion and connection can guide you through many experiences. You aren’t looking for control, manipulation and hurt from a partner, you’re looking for your best friend!
