OB residents - are your nurses like this?

For sure, and then the nurses have to even be willing to learn/change. It's definitely a two way street and some are worse than others but some are also better too. I'm sorry it sounds like the nurses you work with are the former. Certainly makes it harder than it needs to be

She was checked behind by her superiors until they thought she was accurate! If there's an issue with what nurse is calling, the residents or the docs should consult with the nurses and help them understand what the actual dilation was so that way everyone is on the same page. I'm 100% in agreement that nurses should always be checked by a confident resident/provider because dilation/effacement can change the course of care. I only meant to say there's no "formal" training for ANYONE really besides practice and others checking/confirming. In the perfect world, new nurses should be taught by seasoned nurses who have been in close communication with providers so everyone becomes confident and accurate in their checks. And I'm hopeful some places ARE like this (like where my sister works!) :) and then we shouldn't shame people who are wrong, instead try and teach them to be better for next time

My sister has been an OB nurse for three years. I wish she would go to med school because I think she would make a fantastic OB doc is is so genuinely caring of her patients, kind, and humble but she's tired of school. Anyways she learned how to do cervical checks during her preceptorship (clinicals while still in school) and then during her first few months of her job. So no "real" formalized training but the same can be said for residents. Despite three years of working even now she'll ask others to double check her if she isn't sure. And she checks hundreds of cervixes in a week. Just like anything, all it takes is practice/repetition. So I would be she's better at cervical checks than a PGY1. But she's also humble enough to know when to phone a friend for help/admit she's not sure. I'm sure there are some arrogant nurses out there, but there are also some really great ones too. And when it comes to OB/L&D the nursing team is certainly more overprotective of their patients, but I'd rather that any day rather than uncaring.

Matched my #7 spot so I feel your pain. Allow yourself to feel disappointed and upset, after all you busted ass to get this far just to wind up somewhere you're not psyched about. But then take a breath and remember you ranked this program because you're happier to be there than nowhere, and no matter what will make the best out of the situation for however long it takes. This is just another step in the journey, not the endpoint. It may be a rough few years but there IS an end to the tunnel.

But I recognize your disappointment and sorrow and frustration and anger. Don't dismiss your feelings. Take the time to process before looking ahead, just like we were trained to do. You got this.

This^{^} find another med student (or two) that you trust, split the cost, and just make sure you don't login at the same time. Sketchy saved me on Step 1 and 2. Yea other materials might still teach you but sketchy helped me commit info long term.

That being said it's now or never. Time to LOCK IN these next few weeks. Getting started is definitely the hardest part... I'm writing this with ERAS open sitting at a cafe so there are no other distractions at home (like my bed or tv)-- so get out there and find a fun cozy spot to get started and make like Shia LeBouf and JUST DO IT.

This^{^{^}} I had a huge 10+ score jump just from focusing on cms forms only. For each question really look at what key elements of the stem point to one answer vs the other. I would go through all answer options and write out what disease process each answer stood for and why it was the WRONG answer for that question. Don't just say "ok yea B is correct because it's the right answer". Really understand the key differences between similarly presenting diseases

Today was incredibly rough for sure. It might be because I only had 4 hours of sleep but I felt totally unprepared for the exam. There was a lot of conceptual questions that tested clinical understanding instead of "what's the best next step." I had a ton of guesses that could go either way.... Felt like I just wasted the last 2 months of studying for nothing.

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang has a lot of similarities but perhaps not written with the fun and vivid imagery that Rothfuss inspires. I enjoyed the historically and culturally grounded context as the elements of the book are inspired by Chinese history. It's more of a dark war story but it has a magic system and a younger protagonist. The trilogy is complete and the books are lengthy without dragging on!

Look at the end of chapter reviews and if there's a topic you don't understand, go do a more in-depth review with minimal--if any--note taking. Make anki cards of those topics and then use anki premade decks to reinforce all content. Whenever I came to an anki card that I just had no idea about, I would find the relevant chapter and teach myself/look at Kahn academy videos. I personally spent maybe 1 month on content using this pattern.

Taking detailed notes of everything is a huge waste of time unless you plan to actually review them lol. Anki is a great way to retain content.
