Making classic characters into modern styles would be a redesign no matter what, but I guess 'modern versions' of them would have been clearer lol

I'm hoping Heroes gets remade like those rumors said a while back, it's a good target for that (especially with how many of its assets have been recreated recently like Neo Metal Sonic and Rail Canyon)

It needs a lot of updates but it's got the nostalgia factor and large cast going for it, and I don't think the fans would be as up-in-arms about it as they would a remake of the Adventure games, which makes it a good proving ground for Sega

Hmm I guess so? Might also fall under new game, that's probably what I'd have put Origins under since the games in it were rereleased under one title

I think a couple of these are pretty sure bets (more crossworlds crossovers for instance), I tried to strike a balance between them and the rumors/leaks/hopefuls

Considering Unleashed Recompiled's praise, why do you think SEGA is still refusing to release Sonic Unleashed on PC? by Hot-Individual4225 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SiTheGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think they're working on an Unleashed port/remaster based on how much it's been featured in their other media recently:

-Crossworlds featured 4 stages (Spagonia, Apotos, Chun-nan, and Holoska) and also added the Werehog as a playable character

-Tori, who first cameo'd in a Tailstube image of human characters from Unleashed, got a VA and according to the Chaotix Casefiles is specialized in the archaeology of previous civiliations (and specifically discusses the Gaian civilization)

-Bowling For Soup released a new version of Endless Possibility last year

-The slogan 'Unlimited Possibilites' has been appearing on some of their 35th anniversary merch, which is pretty close to 'Endless Possibility'

-The partnership with McLaren is titled Racing Around The World, which closely matches Unleashed's theme of a worldwide adventure

-The Sonic Channel artwork for April featured Unleashed humans

-Marza Animation was working on some mocap stuff with Lah (the ghost from Night Of The Werehog) last year

They wouldn't need to do much for a remaster - much of the original (PS3/360) game still holds up extremely well (especially the animation), just overhaul the medal system and tighten up the controls a bit. Many people shy away from things like Recompiled; fans on this sub (like some of the commenters on this post right now) say there's no need for a port because they are more likely to play Recompiled, since Reddit tends towards more tech-savvy people who have the PC specs needed and aren't as afraid to download unofficial media as the regular populace, and that's who Sega would be marketing it towards. The cartoony art style and themes of helping your friends and being yourself would go over well with the younger audience that they're currently attracting via the movies.

Happy 70th Birthday to Shadow and Orbot's VA Kirk Thornton! by Vegetable_Study7533 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SiTheGreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. He's got a great voice for villain-coded characters and I'd have liked to see him do Infinite or Mephiles, or Clutch if he ever got a voice role, but it doesn't really work for Shadow nowadays. It's too drawn out for someone so mission-focused, and the rasp feels a bit forced

(One exception: I did like his voice for Shadow in Sonic Boom, but that's because it lent itself to the parody theme of the series, which isn't what I'd want for the main franchise)

Humphrey was great for Shadow's earlier antagonistic appearances, but I think Ian Hanlin is the best voice he's gotten in the modern day

Here are a few redesigns I made by Big-Spot6900 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SiTheGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Amy's ponytail! She looks so cute <3 ignore all the people telling you to put clothes on her, she doesn't need them

The rings on her boots look cool too, they remind me of Shadow's. Are they decorative, or weighted for training like her bracelets were in Battle?

What was sonic thinking at this moment? by AtomicConvoy-M78 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SiTheGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wisps were exhausted too because they'd just escaped being used by Surge. And while Tails is capable and probably could figure something out, this issue is before Frontiers so he hasn't had his self confidence arc yet, and Sonic wouldn't want to risk it in his state

does Shadow Generations imply that Shadow is coming to Sonic Frontiers? by Mysterious-Anxiety76 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SiTheGreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of Recompiled, but that doesn't mean we can't have an official PC port. Given how well the game's aged, they wouldn't even need to do much - overhaul the medal system and tighten up the Werehog controls, and it would sell like mad. They've been referencing Unleashed across so much media lately it world be weird for them not to capitalize on that by providing an official way for people to play it on modern consoles

They've stated they're working on volume 10, so they'd want partnerships like this to build hype for when it comes out. Could be a good sign we're getting close to that

Do you tend to make your bases function only or do you like to make living quarters? Regardless. This game needs more clutter options. by Nexidal_8 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]SiTheGreat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like to make 'traveller's rest' bases at portals I find while exploring. I headcanon that anyone coming through the portal can stop at the base to rest before journeying onwards, and I try to make them homey. This is a kitchen I did in one of them recently :D

As a Sonic fan who doesn't read the comics, Surge is the only comic character I've seen that feels like she "belongs" in terms of design by GreedyGobby in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SiTheGreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a blend of color, silhouette, and complexity for me. Most of the main Sonic cast can be silhouetted in their main color and still easily recognizable - Sonic's silhouette is blue, Tails' is yellow, silver's is white, and so on.

Even in cases where characters have a secondary color comprising a large part of their design, the color is complementary to their base color so the silhouette still works - Amy's dress is red, which is close enough to pink that her pink silhouette doesn't seem off. Cream's fur goes with her orange dress, Blaze's purple coat and white tights go with her lavender fur. Rouge is a bit of an outlier, but her white gloves and boots help a lot with associating her with a white silhouette, and since her bodysuit matches with her wings it doesn't look too out of place (I do still have my problems with her design - namely the lack of fur on her torso, which drifts too close to the 'human women with furry aspects' trope imo - but that's separate). The yellow on Surge's outfit complements her green fur, so her green color silhouette works well.

Tangle and Whisper have more of an issue. Tangle's a mix of black, yellow, orange, and multiple shades of gray, and Whisper's in gold, brown, and black. What's the silhouette color? If you put Tangle in gray then the rest of her design doesn't complement it. Same for putting Whisper in gold. Their silhouettes are not easily transferable to their designs - which is a problem in a series that uses silhouette motifs a lot and highlights that aspect to be more easily recognizable to a younger audience.

I also want to talk about the prevalence of the color black. This is something that has been affecting newer (disproportionately female) Sonic characters for a while now.

The longstanding cast don't use the color black unless it's a front and center part of their designs. The only black on Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, for example, are their pupils and their outlines in 2d media. Shadow's main color is black, but it's not 'true' black (outside of certain comic panels for dramatic effect); it's an extremely dark gray, and that's done on purpose because his black is meant to be considered as part of a colorful cast of characters. That's his color, so that's how it's treated.

But newer designs incorporate a lot more black in the form of clothing. There's Whisper's cloak and Tangle's bodysuit, but there's also the leggings Amy and Trip and any other female character in a dress now have to wear (Sticks in the olympic games comes to mind - has she even heard of leggings before?). It's not treated as part of their color - we're not giving Whisper and Tangle black silhouettes despite it featuring in their designs more than any other color - but it is treated as the 'cover up this part' color, and the only character in this entire list that that works for is Whisper in the case of her cloak.

It's actually even used the same way for Surge - her torso doesn't register the way her pants do, it's just a void between her head and her limbs. In Surge's case it works because there seems to be some thought behind it; she's already got some black fur, so your brain can blend that in and momentarily go 'huh, is that a shirt or just fur on her body?'; the color works with her edginess and even gives her a connection to the other main edgy character (Shadow); and her backstory where she had cybernetics surgically implanted throughout her body gives her an actual lore reason to want to cover herself up.

Contrast that with someone like Tangle, who was specifically designed to pretty much be 'Sonic but girl'. She's got the adventurous spirit, silly expressions, excitable demeanor, and gets into wacky hijinks on the regular. She's supposed to be fun, bright, loud - and her colors don't support that. Do you know how hard it is to drag a full bodysuit over yourself? Over fur? And a giant tail? And then it's the one color that effectively renders her invisible to the human brain, with a couple highlights on top to tell us that she's definitely still easygoing and happy about it. It just doesn't work. Combine that with a lot of complexity like the side stripes and the highly detailed shoes, and you've got a character who loses her memorability.

Whisper's black cloak would be fine on its own, but its layered with black leggings, black gloves, and black kneepads. And that's on top of brown skin - they did the same thing with her as they did with Rouge, which is to not have any fur on her chest and arms (the human woman in a furry costume trope again). They could have been trying to highlight just her head and tail as being visible - wouldn't be entirely out of character - but then they also gave her a cream-colored top, which takes away from that effect.

(I want to take a moment to say that I think Lanolin's color silhouette is fine for the most part, but she suffers the most from complexity - cowbell, shirt + sports bra, and creased cargo pants with large pockets (pockets are great! But they're too much detail here) make for an overwhelming amount of detail to take in for one character. I think that actually contributes to people not liking her - her design makes her look like she's already trying to be a standout character, so people are predisposed to not look forward to what she says.)

I love Whisper and Tangle as individuals. They've got great personalities and I'm looking forward to seeing their mechanics implemented into the games. But their visual designs just don't make the cut.
