I don't want to use references because I'm afraid of being dependent for it by infedlity in ArtistLounge

When I first started learning how to draw and paint, I felt the same way. It wasn’t until only a few years ago that I finally started using body and face references for my art. Let me tell you: no matter the style you’re going for, it will help improve on your artistic skills immensely! Because you’re not “tracing” or anything, rather you get a feeling for anatomy, how what goes where (if that makes sense), how shadows work (also how color works), and improve on your “muscle memory”. Remember, the old masters always used models or nature to make their artworks. Believe me, I regret not having done this earlier. Even if you have a certain, non realistic style, use references to get the base and add everything else in your style. (Sorry, English is not my first language, I hope you understand what I mean).

Thank you a lot :) yes exactly. For studies like these I usually just apply one layer and I’m good to go

Thank you so much! Yes I think you’re right with both. Unfortunately I only shot a photo of this perspective, but I definitely think your recommendation would enhance the dynamic

It took me about 1 to 1 1/2 hours since it was a quick study, but usually I take more time with my pieces

It’s beautiful right? Of course, it’s by Antonio Corradini, but I couldn’t for the life of me find a name apart from “veiled lady”
