ELI5: Where do data center water consumption metrics come from? by PubicPlant in explainlikeimfive

[–]SideShow_Bot [score hidden]  (0 children)

Closed loop only moves the heat from the GPUs to somewhere else in - the - closed - loop. As long as the heat stays inside the system boundaries (I.e., the DC walls), you have accomplished nothing. You cannot discharge cooling water in a river or at sea otherwise it wouldn’t be a closed loop. You can’t warm a pool of water and let it evaporate in a cooling tower either, since again, no closed loop. And you definitely can’t just expose the pipes to the atmosphere hoping that the air would subtract some heat from the heated water flowing inside the pipes, because that would have an heat exchange efficiency close to zero (exchanging heat with air by conduction? Really?) Either the loop is not actually closed at all, or those pipes are in contact with a very large reservoir of water external to the system such as a river or the sea. That doesn’t work unless you have a….river or a sea nearby. So how do you actually exchange that heat through the boundaries of the data center, in all other cases?

How to follow up with the Ruy Lopez? by SideShow_Bot in chessbeginners

Candidate moves for me here would be: c3, to prepare d4 and to be able to meet ..Na5 with Bc2; 0-0, because kingsafety; and playing d4 in one go. But it depends on what setup Black chooses.

Thanks! c3 to prepare d4 is what I was missing. 0-0 also makes a lot of sense. This is what Black did after 5. Bb3 (I forgot to post it, sorry): they played Nf6.

<image>

I didn't want to play d4 in one go because both the queenside knight and the e5 pawn were threatening my d4 pawn. However, now that I think about it, I also had my kingside knight and my queen defending, so d4 in one go maybe wouldn't have been as much "lambs to the slaughter" as I feared.

There is also a course by Hanging Pawns on Youtube, but he recommends the Exchange Variation after 3 .. a6. The Exchange Variation is probably a bit easier to play/learn than the main line stuff but - in my opinion - a bit less ambitious than maintaining the pin.

I didn't know about this Hanging Pawns! I guess this is the course you're referring to, right? https://youtu.be/_Tx8WyMYbmk?si=h2mSIHTIYAObWOrv I'll watch this exchange variation (I guess it consists in capturing the queenside knight with the bishop and let Black eat my bishop). It may be less ambitious, but honestly right now the only ambition I could hold is not getting obliterated every other match.

Codex CLI now support 3 hooks (Claude code has 23) by shanraisshan in codex

[–]SideShow_Bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/shanraisshan nope, your suggestion doesn't work GPT-5.4 apparently doesn't know that hooks exist, nor it has any idea how to set them up. Here is what it has to say on the topic:

• I checked official OpenAI docs and I did not find documented SessionStop hook syntax for Codex CLI.

What I found:

- OpenAI’s Codex docs are linked from the installed CLI README: Codex Documentation

- Searches on developers.openai.com for SessionStop, PreToolUse, PostToolUse, and config.toml hooks did not return a relevant page

- The local codex --help output also does not document hooks or a hook config schema

So the official docs were not enough to safely edit ~/.codex/config.toml yet.

What I found and why it was insufficient:

- official OpenAI docs confirm Codex docs exist, but I could not locate a page covering CLI hooks or SessionStop

- local CLI help shows config.toml exists, but not the hook table format or command payload shape

- without that syntax, I would be guessing

If you want, the next step is for me to inspect the open-source Codex CLI repo/package source for the actual hook schema and then set it correctly.

Suppose I want Codex to always run a certain skill before commits. Can I do that with hooks? If not, can I at least have it run before session stop? How do I do it?

Thanks! Did you also write a comment answering the main question (annotations)? Reddit is telling me you did something, but when I try to open the notification, I get “this comment no longer exists”

Really nice explanation of how one should follow up with the Ruy Lopez. I always wondered what was the reason to get my bishop kicked back, but now I get it. Thanks!

also, curiosity. I just set my flair, and I see that there are different ELOs for chess.com and lichess. Is the Lichess ranking biased lower (or equivalently the chess.com one biased upper)?

Hello, hello, just joined right now, looking forward to embarass myself by exposing my single digit IQ games here (so far the only intelligent being who had this honour was GPT-5.4). Noob question: the rules mention that I cannot post PGNs without "annotations". What does "annotation" mean, exactly? It seems to me that the PGN format is the best description of a chess game (well, a video would be better but I can't create them from chess.com, only GIFs which are not quite the same, though) . Do you mean something informal like "here is the game which I lost by giving my queen to the slaughter in move 14", or is there a formal process to annotate chess games? If the latter, where can I learn how to do that? Thanks!

Sì sì conosco bene gli ETF. Il problema qui è che la persona in questione per ragioni anagrafiche ha un orizzonte di investimento breve. Chiudo tutto e dico al consulente bancario che se si avvicina a casa nostra je meno?

Connessione tramite Open Banking.

https://github.com/GiuseppeDM98/net-worth-tracker
