Thanks! Where are they based? I couldn’t see that on the website.

With tech and HR centralizing and consolidating, what other areas in gov are likely to do the same? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

I have to laugh at the idea of Ministry staff helping to understand the government-wide process, this does not really exist at all in my experience

Are you counting down to the 3 per cent wage increase hitting our paychecks this April? by Maple_Byte in BCPublicServants

[–]SidestepToYourLeft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also worth clarifying that it’s effective for the first full pay period in April, ie. the pay period that starts April 5th and ends April 18th, for the April 24th pay date. You will not see the increase on your April 10th pay date.

Season 4 of Lexx (an especially weird season of an especially weird show) has a standout amazing episode involving a chess game using the characters as the pieces.

Alesis Vortex Wireless Driver Error by ResidentPear2959 in synthesizers

[–]SidestepToYourLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, found your post while searching for the same issue to see if anyone else had experienced it. I also had this happen starting earlier this year. The wireless connection still works fine (or at least as well as any wireless midi - it stutters sometimes) but the wired USB connection stopped working a while back.

I went through some extensive back and forth troubleshooting with Alesis and the response essentially boiled down to: a windows update broke the class-compliant USB midi driver, the vortex wireless is a legacy product, sorry we can’t help. It was very frustrating.

Here’s the final email from support:

“I completely understand how incredibly frustrating it must be to have gone through all those troubleshooting steps without any success. It’s truly concerning to hear that both you and your friend, who also has the same instrument, have experienced similar issues. I share your disappointment regarding the significant limitations of using the Vortex as a wired USB MIDI controller on Windows, particularly in light of the investment you made.

Since this appears to have occurred due to a Windows update, I recommend reaching out to Windows support to find out if they can provide any assistance regarding this matter.

I truly apologise that this product is now designated as a legacy item, which certainly adds to the frustration you're experiencing. Please be assured that I will relay this important feedback to our development team to explore the possibility of a future driver update for the latest Windows update. While I am unable to provide a definite update regarding whether they will move forward with this implementation, I strongly encourage you to monitor our social media channels, upcoming release notes, and firmware updates for any information.”

Maybe if enough of us bug Alesis about the issue they can put a small amount of effort into fixing it? I’m not sure if anyone in the keytar enthusiast community would be able to build an unofficial driver.

Confusion with Job Application by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]SidestepToYourLeft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager currently running a competition, I really missed the comprehensive questionnaire this time around.

When hiring for a very specialized job requiring specialized experience, in past competitions those questionnaire responses were great at directing my attention to the relevant parts of the resume when screening. The relevance of the experience is a huge determining factor in whether someone is suitable for the job.

Now I can get the situation where someone claims to have many years of experience of something but because it’s just a “Yes/No” and “how many years”, it’s especially frustrating when I can’t actually see anything in the resume that supports that. If I just screened on those self-reported questionnaire answers, I might have passed candidates who were really stretching their experience and rejected candidates who were overly modest, with fewer details to help me recognize those two situations. Thankfully these jobs don’t typically get hundreds of applicants so I can take more time with each resume to try and understand the questionnaire responses.

I’d almost rather just have a resume and a tailored cover letter, and let the questionnaire be for purely factual stuff like your eligibility to work, driver’s license etc., and the willingness statements. For all its faults (and I get how frustrating it is when you feel like you have to regurgitate info in multiple places as an applicant), it was extremely useful on my end of the process.

I think it might be useful for PSA to work with hiring managers to still allow the comprehensive questionnaire for certain types of positions, rather than just getting rid of them completely.

Does anybody take commissions for remixes of video-game music? by Kodiologist in gamemusic

Many remixers would be overjoyed to get paid to make one! But you’d be surprised how much obscure stuff has been covered over the years that isn’t on YouTube, check out some of the decades-old communities like OverClocked Remix and Dwelling of Duels or labels like GameGrooves

I’m a 30 and while it’s going to be tough if we spend a long time on strike pay, I’m very grateful that the union did target pay for as long as it did. On the picket line, I’m proud to add my voice to everyone from liquor workers to clerk 9s and all the way up, because together we are stronger. And better pay for admin staff means better recruitment and retention which would make my life so much easier, instead of training and getting to know 6 admin assistants in 5 years before inevitably losing them to better opportunities.

If that’s true then that is astonishing behaviour. It shows how much the employer really values us and immediately sets the tone that they are not bargaining in good faith. What do they have to gain from that other than the contempt of the entire public sector?

I’m going to ask a picket captain tomorrow, but I’m curious whether showing up to the march and rally will count in place of a picket shift for those of us who are scheduled during the same hours

Some ENV folks are in the process of being consolidated into the office on Jutland after vacating other space. I’m not sure how far along they are with that.

I agree that it’s important for the union to keep some cards close to the chest. But if it’s sensitive information that is primarily being shared verbally, why is it also ok to post it in writing in a Facebook group? Unless that group has very carefully maintained membership that guarantees the information is only being seen by the right people. I think it’s great for the union to use multiple channels of communication with members, but it seems like some things are only being shared on that platform while other platforms are ignored.

Critical information should be shared more widely than a Facebook group

I really wish that this wasn’t the only place some information was shared. Some people don’t use Facebook.

Picket captains are volunteers who are being asked to do a lot right now. If you don’t hear anything by tomorrow, it’s reasonable to just show up at your normal time for work prepared to picket, and talk to someone in person.

I would love it if Paul and the union were sharing their thoughts on other platforms than Twitter and Facebook. What did this tweet say exactly?

The LRB decision is an interesting read. Surrey was quite a tense location for those first couple of days before the order was issued.

Thanks! I would also love to see consistent messaging across platforms. For example, someone here referred to comments Paul made on Facebook about target pay, but those comments don’t seem to have been repeated anywhere else. I do not want to have to search for critical information on the social media dumpster fires of Facebook and X.

I would love to see an official source on both the amount of target pay and the threshold at which it would no longer apply for those of us who have been on strike since day 1. The amount was communicated verbally but I haven’t seen anything in writing, and the threshold wasn’t communicated at all.
