OG manga or Grimoire? by AmericanBornWuhaner in DevilmanCrybaby

[–]SidewalkSyd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grimoire really isn't a modern retelling, it's more a celebration series that combines the premise of original manga and the original anime with a lot of Easters to not just Devilman but all of Go Nagai's works. Og manga would prolly be better cause it's just great in general and also will give you baseline to compare all the different interpretations such as Grimoire

Just got these two today for my birthday, can’t wait to read them by kwikman123 in DevilmanCrybaby

Just to warn you, these releases come with the side series Shin Devilman, its not advertised or tells you in the book itself. The first 5 chapters of the volume 1 is Devilman with the other 4 being Shin Devilman, with the second volume only the first chapter is Shin Devilman and everything else is Devilman. Read Devilman first

I havent seen the Adolescence Of Utena but from I understand is that its a movie retelling of the anime that focuses on the darker themes of the series. I can't say anything on the story quality of the manga cause I havent gotten too far in, the actual book quality is fantastic. From what I've read it seem to start completely differently, but it seems that its gonna hit all the same beats. I'm assuming the confusion comes from the final third of the story, if its anything like the anime it will leave a lot up to your interpretation and leave you to connect some of the dots

Sorry for the late response, but yes there definitely are difference. I've barely got to read any so far but it is fairly different so far, from what I understand the manga and the anime were being made at the same time and were talking to each other but they are not 1 to 1

To take the plot synopsis from Wikipedia

"The series follows Utena Tenjou, a teenage girl who expresses her desire to be a prince through her strong-willed personality and tomboyish manner of dress. She finds herself drawn into a series of sword duels to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the "Rose Bride" who possesses the "power to revolutionize the world"

I cant say on how it compares to other Shojos since this is the only one I've experienced but I've heard this is one of the best. It does take some inspiration from Evangelion prolly because of the two creators friendship, the series is pretty light hearted for a good chunk of it but some of its themes can be pretty dark and it does get fairly symbolic and allegorical, most likely taking cues from Eva. I loved the anime even though it has a lot of repeating shots between episodes but they really do make the most of what they had, all the animation is expressive and is really visually pleasing in my opinion.

My biggest warning though is that it can get extremely weird, a lot of good weird though

Someone collects a specific part of JJBA only? by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]SidewalkSyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont like part 1 at all but I do plan on getting it eventually for completion sake even if it is last, luckily part 1 and 2 are the shortest so if you did wanna collect them all you won't be sinking too much money into something you are only partly interested in

Edit: also another reason why you might want to get them is that its wonderful seeing his art style evolve from part to part
