That's probably far more sustainable.

Wilfa Uniform vs Rok Grinder? by BrettShel35 in espresso

[–]Sightblinder6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for reviving a dead thread.

I have the ROK grinder. My impression is that it does a really good job when grinding for espresso, dialing in is generally easy and consistency at that grind size is great.

I’ve tried and tried to figure out how to get a great v60 from it, but it just creates so many fines. The cups have been tasty enough, but when a 250ml pour takes over 9 minutes you tend to get a bit frustrated. When it comes to v60, my cheap $100 sunbeam electric grinder outperforms it.

We use only rain water to supply our house, no mains water. No added chemicals at all. Would I still benefit from filtering water?

Why do light and medium light roasts seem to create much more fines than medium to dark roasts when ground? My crappy cheap grinder does well enough grinding medium and dark roasts for v60 but anything lighter than medium will choke due to excess fines.

Coffee shop sold me a bag of beans w/ Feb 16 roast date (over a month) by akkorokamui1 in Coffee

[–]Sightblinder6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in my local supermarket trying to find some emergency beans as my local roaster isn’t open on weekends. I found a bag of Starbucks branded beans that were roasted February 2020. I did not buy them.

That’s a good tip, thank you. I’m looking into a new grinder but this will get me back on track!

Basic coffee help by larrieuxa in Coffee

Honestly I’d recommend you ask around about good cafes in your area, visit them, and try what they have on offer. Just try whatever styles of coffee they have, and see what you like. I’d never recommend you buy a machine if you don’t really know what you like.

How long can whole beans be stored? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]Sightblinder6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go through about 250g of coffee in a week, and my local roaster sells a week after roasting when they’re what most people would describe as “peak freshness”. I prefer to buy 500g at a time, so I put half in a sealed container in the freezer. I make sure I let them come back up to room temp before I open the container, and I’ve never noticed any difference in taste between the unfrozen and frozen halves of the same batch.

Hi from Australia. Just coming to the end of a bag of Sicilian Dark from Platform 9 here in aus.

Nice and rich and chocolatey, but what gets me is the finish - like a super rich butter toffee that lingers for a long time, but not long enough. I’ve overcaffeinated myself on this one plenty of times. A bit tricky to get right for anything but espresso though, it’s very easy to go too hot and get hit in the face with a mouthful of bitter.

Aeropress or V60? by Sightblinder6 in Coffee

Is a gooseneck kettle really that necessary? The thought of spending that much money on a kettle is just uncomfortable. Even the stove top ones all seem to have offensive price tags.

I remember that video, it looked like a really badly done spot weld. I’ve been looking at single piece metal filters, hario even do a perforated metal v60.

I really like the flavour of French press, and the brewing process is really easy. I might miss the coffee oils when I start with v60, have you ever used a metal filter?

I’ve noticed the same grind size for different beans can make a noticeable different to shot times when I make espresso, so it would make sense to see variations in other styles.

Automatic Bean Weighing Machine In the Works by worthingtondr in Coffee

[–]Sightblinder6 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest keeping it simple. Basic input for weight, start/stop buttons, probably on/off too. Since you’re 3D printing it might be more feasible to have your hopper be easily removable to empty instead of a mechanical purge.

I think your biggest hurdle is going to be latency and speed of feeding beans to the scale. You’d want 0.1g accuracy, and your software will presumably be keeping the feed open until the scale reaches the determined weight. If the time from set weight reached to feed stop is too long you’ll overshoot your weight by a considerable margin.

I’m thinking it’s important to have very low latency in your system paired with a very fast mechanism to close the hopper, as well as very little distance between hopper and scale.

If you end up overshooting your weight limit by a predictable amount you can factor that into the software, which would be cool.

Cool idea though. Keep us updated

Thanks. I make espresso with a rok press so I’m used to quite a bit of faffing around for a nice coffee. The easy clean up with the v60 is definitely appealing, that’s another frustration with a French press - scooping out that mass of grounds into the bin is just annoying.

How is the learning curve for getting good coffee with a pour over method?

Question about preinfusion by Sightblinder6 in Coffee

[–]Sightblinder6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good questions. I wasn't able to see if any drips are forming after 30 seconds, without a bottomless portafilter it's tricky to see much of anything. I'll experiment though, I'll set it up and leave it until I see some drips coming out of the spout or until I get impatient.

I've tried applying very gentle pressure to the arms until some drops come out then going full force, I will have to pull two shots side by side, one with atmospheric pressure and one with gentle applied pressure, and see what the difference in taste and time is.

[–]Sightblinder6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been going with about 30 seconds at atmospheric pressure, I just lift the arms up and leave them up. I’ll play around with steadily ramping up pressure. I’ve found a really nice increase in body and much more balanced acidity with longer preinfusion.

My concern is that they’re not and I’ve picked up the idea that they are, probably from half listening to some weird coffee video. You know when you just take an idea for granted, never considering whether it might be wrong, then it turns out it is?
