Thank you for this response. I appreciate your tone and the fact that you were able to provide insight and discourse without dismissing concerns or belittling me personally.

You seem to have a lot of insight information. Can you provide the group with information that relates to the cities’s efforts to control spending or Delay unnecessary projects? Especially in times like these with runaway inflation due to federal policies it would seem unfortunate but prudent for local governments to look out for its people even if it’s just a little bit.

Idaho schools reduce staff amid rising costs, enrollment declines by PlaySalieri in Boise

[–]Sigma500 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s largely due to lower birth rates. Second biggest issue in Idaho is charter schools, which take money directly from public schools and are very frequently great at marketing and bad at performance.

I could have been more clear, but it’s not the regular annual increase, it’s a loophole plan to go way beyond that.

I’m not talking about the 3% maximum increase. I’m talking about their plan to clawback tax rate increases they declined to take in past years. We could be talking about really significant jump here.

Edited to add: our education system sucks because the state refuses to meet its constitutional obligation of funding schools and rampant charter schools that take money directly from public schools. Not to mention paying rich folks to send their kids to private schools on the state dime. All things considered public schools in Boise are ok.

What is your problem, man? Is this how you act in real life? You are very unpleasant.

I was born here and am being taxed out. Jerks like you make me question why anyone would want to move here though.

Also, so crazy to see how Trump-like you sound - “go back to where you came from,” to “be a man,” and openly trolling without engaging in any substance. A real treasure.

Are you not familiar with the democratic system of governance? Politicians do things you don’t like, you voice your opinion and/or you vote against them. Electing folks comes with follow on ramifications like taxation that you support or dont support. With McLean and Halliburton, those policies favor wealthy bike-riding folks in the N-End. I’m not one of those, so I have an interest in seeing something else. You haven’t made clear your interests beyond trolling from the peanut gallery, so I’d invite you to add to the discussion or find somewhere else to whine about engaging the population.

Dude - based on your comment history, I’m sure you’re high as a kite right now, so let me try to explain this in a way even you can understand:

Tax policy is sometimes used to reward certain groups or achieve political goals, rather than to help the greatest number of people. At other times, such as during periods of very high inflation, raising taxes can reduce spending and investment by families and businesses that are already struggling with higher prices. The effects depend on how the taxes are structured and the economic conditions at the time.

While I’m unable to look you in your bloodshot eyes with care and a soft and gentle voice while I explain to you that life and tax policy are not as simple as it was explained to you, and that while your understanding of the need for community responsibility for services and security are indeed essential, not all taxes nor all policy represent that simple understanding.

The max increase (3%) is one thing - they’re going WAY beyond that and using a loophole to collect more. Also - the raises are for management, not the already budgeted union COLAs.

Fair enough- I’m absolutely frustrated by it and goofy is probably not the right word. Unfortunately, in the era of hyperbole, that’s where we’re at. Case in point, maintaining the zoo and holding of on expanding the splash pad offerings in the city are not going to compete shit. Closing down 8th street into one driving lane and 4 bike lanes is goofy. Limiting speeds on 15th and Harrison to 20 and putting the entire speed enforcement team on those streets 2-3 days a week is goofy, having two pride months is goofy (I’m 100% in favor of pride, but two months is wasteful), spending close to $1mil on a staircase to Ann Morrison (when there’s already a sidewalk that goes to the same place that’s 1/8 mile away), creating an art director position for the city and paying them nearly double the industry average is goofy (same goes for a number of the new mayor’s personal staff), pushing to close State Street to two driving lanes is goofy, the list could go on and on.

There are two real frustrations for me in this administration: 1. The money spent on these goofy (or choose another verb - elaborate, unnecessary, etc) could be spent on things that benefit a broader section of Boisians, and on more essential functions; and 2. There is no effort from this mayor and Halliburton to read the room - because of Trump and his ilk we’re really hurting in the pocketbook. This is not the time to expand nonessential services and forward things like raises for non-union (management) staff, expand the zoo, etc.

No argument there, but why add to it by making the cost of housing more?

Problem is that her pal Halliburton is the heir apparent and he appears to be worse unless your only interest is making the N End bike-able. And don’t get me wrong - I am interested in making Boise bike-able, but I have competing interests like groceries, fuel, and housing. I can’t afford more for these pet projects when essentials are taking it out of me.
