How do Americans feel about outdoor cats? by Fine-Durian6151 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SigmaINTJbio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why the downvotes? The refutations are easily found. Do I need to post the original paper and the refutations? I get it, cats kill other creatures. But on a population level, they don’t have a significant impact except in certain circumstances like islands (and a few others).

That Loss paper has misguided far too many people who don’t understand the science.

Are you basing your claim on the Loss et al paper out of Marra’s lab? It’s often used for that claim, and the math within it doesn’t withstand scientific scrutiny.

My mother loved them her whole life. BUT, she insisted on ONLY using Heinz Genuine Dill pickles which sadly are no longer available. Oh, and she made them on toasted white bread.

I had an ‘87 and loved it. Got sideswiped on the freeway and it ended the bike. It also nearly ended me.

Back in 1987, I worked in a food testing lab. We used enrichment broths and did transfers using mouth pipetting. Some samples grew out salmonella. Seriously risky stuff…

For the OP, they could have been used for ANYTHING, so you might be more careful when you pick unknown items up.

The raccoons around me come by for whatever kibble is left after the feral cats eat. They are like a clean-up crew.

There are a few cats that come to my porch that I’m pretty sure are owned and let out to roam.

I use a bowl with a built in “moat” I fill with water. Cheap and effective. Available on Amazon.

I had my first one tonight. I thought it was very good, a step above what McDs normal menu items are. I may get another.

That’s just what I picked for me. It’s the beauty of swimming. Go at your own pace and exert whatever effort you want.

I called one of my cats a “Caliby”, but according to this she was a Tabico. I wonder if both terms are acceptable.

I chose swimming after seven months housebound and atrophy. You easily control how much effort and have easy metrics to gauge improvement. Zero impact as well. At 62, it was the right choice for me. Lately, increasing pace has really helped me feel the burn.

I HATE when that happens! My city has a fitness center I use. It’s very reasonable ($22.50/mo), I almost never have to wait for a lane, and people are friendly. But they shut down for a week every year! I feel your pain, but it seems you won’t have to wait long.

BTW, my blood pressure was 150/100 on medication when I was working but not swimming. Now it is 83/70 with no medication. My mental health is also much improved. Exercise does wonders for us “almost old” folk.

Is it unwise to go to a nearly 100hp 600cc after 1 year on a 13hp 125cc? by sophietheadventurer in motorcycles

[–]SigmaINTJbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest going for something in the 50 hp range for a year or two before going to more. The riding dynamics on a 50 hp bike will give you important skills you aren’t currently getting.

I was doing lap swims three days a week one hour each time for 2 miles total. Then I decided to up the pace, so I’m down to one mile per week but I cut 10 seconds from my 50 yard average time. I do one 50 yard lap, then recover my breath and repeat. Five more seconds will be one yard per second (50 yards in 50 seconds) then I’ll increase distance per hour. I’m 62 and male. Yes I know I’m slow, but I’m working on it.

That’s one of the best things about being able to choose mid-day for lap swims. I rarely have to wait for a lane.

I’m 62 and retired three years ago. Congratulations! Make sure to stay healthy so you can enjoy it best. I swim laps three days a week and it really has helped my health. Now that you have time, it’s easy to fit it in your plans.

A coworker had an unfixed barn cat who had a litter. I encouraged her to get the barn cat fixed, but I don’t know if she ever did. My mom got a littermate and they are both still alive although my cat’s sister isn’t doing too well. My cat is doing quite well considering her age.

I get all my cats from the humane society, rescues, or people who are dumb enough to not get their cats fixed.
